Anyone ever work with "perl"?

I've got to crunch some firewall logs and it has been suggested I can use perl. I have never touched any kind of program language or know where to begin. Totally clueless here. I understand its something I can download to my WinXP and work with from there? Where is the best place for a newbie to begin?

Perl is a good scripting language for that, check out "Regular Expressions".

For a version of perl that will work with XP, check out www.activestate.com/perl/. You want ActivePerl. You can use notepad just fine, but Komodo is a good Windows development environment...its a little sluggish though (based on Mozilla yuck). I'm not advocating that Windows is the best platform for this though, nothing beats *nix and vi.

Let me know if I can help further.

grep is your friend, you might want to hang out with sed and awk too.
