How Do I Tell If My Power Supply is Dead?

I am building a new computer, I just ordered a new motherboard, so I cant put it all together yet. But I plugged in the Power Supply just to see if it would power up... ie the fan would turn on, but it didnt.

How can I tell if the power supply works or not?

it doesnt really work that way. there is a connector on the power supply that plugs into the MB. there is also a power button lead on the front panel of the case that needs to be plugged into the MB as well.

it has been a long while since i have done any pc work but i never remember being able to test an ATX power supply just by plugging it in without having it attached to a MB.

what makes you think the power supply doesnt work? it is pretty obvious when a power supply goes bad. one day the pc turns on, the next day it doesnt do squat and the fan doesnt spin.

The power supply needs to be connected to the MB. You can use the button on the front or you can jump the two terminals on the MB to power it up.
