Android experts..

So, I got a pretty much brand new Samsung Captivate earlier this week..it's been unlocked, etc. The last FW update is 2.1 which is around 9/11/2010. I know there's a pretty good/important firmware update to 2.2, however it won't get past 50% before the update fails.

I'm more used to Iphones, so I'm a bit lost - I've tried reseting the phone and it still fails at 50%.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

The firmware update isn't for 2.2, it's a different version of 2.1, and something like 95% of the updates fail when updating. If you want, I can put a 2.2 beta rom on the phone and root it for you if you can't figure out how to, it's a bit hard to figure out at first. Look up cognition 2.2 beta on xda-developers.com under the captivate section.

I did it over wifi.

I'm pretty sure the phone is already rooted, as it has a couple of apps for super-user access and etc, that always causes the phone to crash. I'd like to update it pretty quickly, as the phone's being a major PITA. It'll just hop from page to page, with really no notice, or go back several pages if I'm just scrolling down. The kid that I got it from said he had no clue what he was doing and I believe him..

90, I'll give that a shot - thanks. What's this Froyo 2.2 that I keep hearing about? I've noticed a lot of adds mentioning that theirs is updated to that..

That's the problem.
You're doing an OTA update for the stock rom, but you aren't stock, you're rooted. It's probably going to fail every time.

yep, that's why it won't update. 2.2 is the latest version of android, some improvements like flash availability, and some other small changes. If you can, come out to the carrollton sonic meet on thursday, bring a laptop and the usb cable and I'll get it done for you in like 10 mins.

If you have rooted, I'd run one of a many custom ROM's with the software base of your choice. This is where you do your homework though, not that you couldn't wipe and re-do; it just becomes time consuming.

I have a Moto D1, so not that it applies to you, but I found a custom ROM by ChevyNo1 which I've been running happily for over 1 month now.

Just install these drivers and I think that's it. http://www.ponack.net/downloads/SAMS...Phones_x86.exe

I can use my phone as a wireless router if we need internet for anything else. Just make sure you bring the usb cord.
