How many mb/s internet service do i need to play PS3 games online?

Charter was charging me 89$/months for 10mb/s so i canceled them. Whats the lowest amount that I can get and not have trouble palying games like MW2?

Here at the house i'm running a 3MB line and do not get any lag directly wired to the router.

This is on an XBOX though...

MW2 is a bit different than other games because it relies on using someone in the party as the host to serve the game. To me that requires a better connection since we're not hitting some high end connections.

Anyways, I think 3MB is the absolute lowest you can get, because before it was 1.5MB here and was laggy.

Your ping time/latency has a lot to do with lag as well.

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

Games where individuals were the hosts?

For example, Halo3 was fine with 1.5MB, but MW2 lagged.

yep....those of you who have AT&T DSL, make sure you have your speed set to "fast" instead of "interleave". You can call them up and ask them what your speed is set on. Fast is instant and interleave does error checking and such before it goes out to the cloud. I've seen some cust have interleave and work fine, but majority of them do complain.

Do you have to call to change it?

yes..call and ask what it's set on, or just holla at me.. .. If it's fast, that's good. Tell them to change it to fast if it isn't. Tell them you play online games and that it cause s games to skip or takes little longer to respond.

Here is my 2 cents.

You should be able to PLAY just fine at 1.5 or even lower. However, I'd recommend at least 3 (DLC, loading and so forth, the more the merrier) - also pay attention to your upload speeds as they do matter.

Other factors as mention are your carriers level of service. If you have high latency, packet loss and all that other jazz it'll all bring down your gaming experience. I don't care if you have 30/30, you'll hate it with packet loss.

When going slim on bandwidth, you really limit your ability to do anything else. You can perform QoS but IMO it is not worth it for consumer issues.
1. QoS values are nuked when they hit the internet. QoS would only work internally which could help....
2. Most consumer devices don't do QoS or they don't do it very well. Especially if it is inspecting, marking and classifying a bunch of internal traffic.
3. QoS needs to be end to end or do it based of IP address if you're not going to use markings. Which now that I think about it, the PS3 PROBABLY does not have any configurable markings?

Long story short, you don't need much bandwidth. However, the carrier needs to be solid and there really can't be much else using the internet connection.
