I'm a nuts and bolts guy...

so rooting my G1 was a fucking pain in the ass! LOL

I got it running 1.5 and then I was trying to put 2.2 on it, and I thought I had bricked it at one point... I managed to get it back running on 1.5

at this point, I'm just happy that it has multi-touch and tethering!

2.1 is when it gets fun, I love me some live wallpapers.

From what I understand its pretty hard to brick android phones, worse case just wipe it all, install factory recovery image and recover it. I just rooted my N1 the other night after returning it back to stock recovery when 2.2 came out and installed cyanogen 6.0.

I've bricked this phone 3 times already, but only for like 10 seconds each time, they're almost impossible to permanently fuck up, unless you just completely don't have any idea what you're doing. If you really want 2.2 on it, pay for my gas, and I'll drive down there and do it for you.

LOL, just have to read it over and over again. Send me a link to the install instructions, and I'll try to explain it if I'm familiar with any of it.

i've done 3 or 4 g1's now. Pretty simple. Usually go with the cyanogen rom. Seems to be the most stable.

With the cyanogen rom, and setcpu overclocking it, the ones i played with actually became phones i wouldn't mind having for a backup or just to play with.
I've rooted and flashed G1's, mytouchs, my evo and an htc hero.

i'm hoping someone will let me get my hands on their samsung epic, intercept, or moment. haven't had the chance to see the difference in those for the rooting and flashing process yet.

samsung said that the galaxy s line of phones was open source phone so rooting this phone is soooooo easy, run 1 zip and your done. the phone even comes with a factory recovery screen for flashing. and clockwork recovery is already ported to it as well. so

because you can do alot more with the phone you paid alot for. just like a computer. you can buy a pre made one then put your own parts in it. why? because adding better software or upgrading what you have makes your comp run better and faster. same concept for the smart phones.

Ya'll are a bunch of noobs, "bricked" means it broken and not able to be fixed. Bricked does not mean you are stuck on startup loop or some other screw up and have to wipe/reflash.

Like I said, its pretty damn hard to brick an android, if it fucks up just wipe and start over.

I got the 2.22.23.02 radio and the HBOOT-1.33.2005 (death SPL) and I'm running JF1.5... I try to load Cyanogen 6.0.0 on it, and I get: "E:Can't find update script Installation aborted"

and it get stuck in the start-up and just shows G1 on the screen... that's where I thought I had bricked it.

so I tried to update it back to JF1.5 and it took...

the walk-throughs often have dead links or just gloss over shit that I have no fucking idea WTF they're talking about

oh well, I've got multi-touch and wireless tethering

Yeah I was getting that the last time I rooted my N1 and it was because the new recovery image wouldnt "stick". Had to flash cyanogen through fastboot if I remember right then use Terminal Emulator on cyanogen to flash the Amon RA recovery. It was a PITA.

Forrest, i wish I could help more but I have never messed with a G1. You may try to flash cyanogen like I did. It sounds like the new recovery image isnt sticking. These are instructions for a Nexus One but maybe they will help.

had the same issue... I think the stock ROM (maybe just since the OTA update?) tries to "fix" the recovery image at startup, which results in you losing the just-flashed image. In any event, here's how I worked around it using recovery-RA-nexus v1.5.3:

Copy each of the following to the root directory of your sdcard: update-cm-XXXXX-N1-signed.zip, and gapps-passion-ERE36B-2-signed.zip.

Boot into recovery-RA without flashing (fastboot boot recovery-RA-nexus-vXXXXX.img). This will upload the recovery as a temporary boot image, so at this stage it needs to be present and accessible on your computer (not the sdcard).

Wipe the device (Wipe data/factory reset)

Flash the update-cm-XXXXX-N1-signed.zip file (Flash zip from sdcard). Do not reboot afterward.

Flash the googly bits (gapps-passion-ERE36B-2-signed.zip) file.
Reboot the device, and go through the normal Android account setup.

At this point you should be able flash the recovery successfully (and have it stick) via fastboot, using the normal procedure. If this still doesn't work, you also have the option of flashing it within CyanogenMod directly.

Copy recovery-RA-nexus-vXXXXX.img to the root directory of your sdcard, and rename it to "recovery.img".
Open the Terminal Emulater app, and type "su". Tap "Allow" when prompted for root access.
Flash the image via "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img"

As usual with this rooting stuff, don't blame me if your N1 morphs into a rutabaga... I'm only reporting what I did, and don't promise that it's a risk-free proposition. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, however.

actually there's 2 versions of bricked a soft brick and a hard brick. a soft brick is where you messed up some system files but are still able to get to recovery, just not your home, and are able to reflash the stock rom or fix whats broken with ADB. a hard brick is where its broken completely and cant do anything with it. and yes it is pretty hard to completely break a android phone with all the step by step instructions and 1 click root stuff out there. i took my g1 from vanilla android 1.6 to cyanogen 1.6 to cyan 5.0 to cyan 6.0 to 6.1 with death spl, amon ra recovery and all that good stuff. now im doing it on my vibrant .

the store i work at is a service and repair center as well, and we refer to 'bricked' as completely bricked, the whole soft bricked is a bs term that someone came up with. That's just like saying that someone who's injured is already dead lol.

i see what your saying but what do you call a phone that's say stuck at a boot loop due to bad flashing? broken? i cant really think of anything better than soft bricked lol.
