iphone 3GS jailbreak on new firmware?

My phone is acting up and I may have to restore it which will upgrade the firmware. Is there a JB for this firmware for my 3GS? I believe the new firmware is 4.1...and 4.2 is coming out in Nov.

4.0.0 and 4.0.1 can be jailbroken
4.0.2 cannot

I had to update to 4.0.2 when mine messed up a couple of weeks ago. Have to wait for 4.1.0 to come out before they'll jailbreak it because 4.0.2 came out only to patch the hole in 4.0.1 that allowed it to be jailbroken.

4.1 is jailbreakable. Just a matter of time before the exploit comes out. It will be a bootrom exploit, not the JailbreakMe hack like with 4.0.1. I'm hoping it will come out soon. Just make sure you dont upgrade to 4.1 until the jailbreak does come out. Or you may be screwed permanently.

So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2/3.2.2, out of the box?

No, there won’t be. FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole. With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the “cat & mouse” with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes. To quote WOPR, “the only winning move is not to play”.

I ordered a replacement glass and digitizer, as well as a new back casing off Ebay a couple days ago and once they are installed and the phone is in good shape I will install my SIM card, and go from there. Not even sure I need to JB it for my uses, but since I regularly tether thru Wifi with my Nokia E75 I am considering JB'ing this Iphone. I downloaded F0recast to determine what I had to work with and according to it the phone IS still capable of JB'ing (4.0.2)..and according to what I have read this JB will work.

Its NOT the only one I have found.

So is there a jailbreak out for 4.1 or not? And hypothetically speaking if there was a jailbreak, what would be involved in upgrading my iPhone 3GS from 3.1 to 4.1? Would I need to restore back somehow and than upgrade and jailbreak? What happens to my apps that I've legally bought from the app store as well as through Cydia?

I do like some of the features of 4.1 but won't do it if I lose everything and have to buy the software back.

No Jailbreak for 4.1 yet, but the iPhone Dev Team said that they found an exploit that they can use for 4.1 but no details on when it would come out or how it would work (tethered/untethered).

OK. What about the update scenario I mentioned? Would I have to restore, upgrade and than jailbreak again and reinstall my apps?

Ok the new screen and back cover is installed and the phone is working great so now I'm going to start tinkering with it a bit. Presently it has 4.0.2 installed and I am not planning to update to 4.1 just yet. Gonna start looking for apps that suit my purposes before I JB it. With my Nokia I had a program installed that allowed me to broadcast wifi using my data plan so I could access the internet on my laptop. Is there an app available to do this yet? What about using Bluetooth to do the same?

I use MyWi on my JB 3GS. It's a paid JB app but it allows me to broadcast a WiFi network using a basic WEP Key and tether either via USB or Bluetooth.
