360 rrod

This unit is outside the 3 year warranty, so I will likely try the x clamp mod to revive it (even if only temporary) so I can use it as trade for a new one.

Any reason I should even consider switching to a PS3?

I'm an XBOX fan, but would likely buy a PS3 these days. There was a time when I felt the XB360 was superior, but I think Sony has at LEAST evened the playing field. Then the built in blu-ray just sort of gives that extra incentive.

Just fix it and keep it. Or trade it for a new 360S. I got one a couple weeks ago and love it.

Just do the cheap spacer mod and repaste, it'll work fine again.

I've heard PS3's have overheating problems as well. I've never had a 360 go out on me and there are time where I play 8+ hours a day. I just keep it in the upright position and it seems to do fine.

PS3 pros - bluray, built in batteries for controllers, free online play

360 pros - Xbox live's many features, more console exclusive games.

I personally only use my roommates ps3 for movies. I like playing games a lot more on the 360 for whatever reason.

x2

I had my box for 7 years even though I didn't play much until recently.

I just got a slim when it crapped out and I couldn't be happier with the purchase.

I got the 4 gig for 199.

Gamestop was running an offer for a trade in 360 + $100 for the same one I got, I'm not sure when they will run it again though.

Which fix is that? I see no less than 4 or 5 different "fixes".

You can have yours fixed for 99.99 and it comes with another year warranty. They ship out of mesquite so turn around time is pretty quick.

Use this to find your secondary error code and you'll know what fix to use.

--==SECONDARY ERROR CODES==-

The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code
Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:
All four lights flashing - 0
One light flashing - 1
Two Lights flashing - 2
Three lights flashing - 3

It's dead. Turned on long enough to reflow the solder joints, but after letting it cool down (and put everything in correctly before enclosing it) it wouldn't turn on again. I'll just go buy a new one sometime in the near future.

The towel trick makes it worse in the long run but I got another month out of mine by doing it.

It won't even turn on now. I've loosened and re-tightened the heatsink screws, but nothing has allowed it to turn back on. Oh well.

Anyone want to buy a dead 360?

Sell it on craigslist. Some people know how to fix fix them. Unfortunately, I don't.
