Any Ubuntu users around here? A little noob help...

Right now I am running the latest ubuntu, I think its 10.04. Well, when they come out with the next version, can I simply download updates to install it? You know, sort of like you do with windows. With windows, you just download a bunch of updates and service packs, and you are up to date. But what about when they come out with ubuntu 11? Will I have to back up everything, and then wipe my hard drive and install everything all over again? Is it like upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista?

No, it'll install seamlessly. The only thing you might run into is it might ask you if you want to remove old/invalid/out of date packages.

So, it won't be like going from XP to Vista? All my data will be in the same place, untouched? For example, all my documents will still be in the "Documents" folder? And all my music will be left alone? What about my installed themes, and other programs such as screenlets?

Now I', not 100% positive about themes and screenlets but if something is incompatible it'll likely say so and remove it.

If you'll go to http://forums.pcpitstop.com/ and register, they have a Linux specific sub-forum w/ some EXTREMELY knowledgeable folks that post regularly. Their Linux knowledge FAR surpasses mine.

If you'd like a definitive answer, I'd go there. There's also a plethora of other info in the other forums. I'll give you a welcome if/when you register and post.

Tx

I updated 6.10 to 7.04 to 8.04 and ran into an issue because my original version didn't give me the option to update automatically. I had to load the modules using a script I found and it messed up some stuff. It took me a couple of days to get everything back.

As long as your version has the option to do a version update/upgrade, you should be fine.

Well I been testing Ubuntu out for a while now, and man is it ever buggy. I'm learning linux pretty well, and I have to say that I really like it. But I don't know if its gnome, or just ubuntu in general, but the bugs will make you want to pull your hair out. I am thinking of switching to Kubuntu or Xubuntu or some other linux distro like PClinuxOS or something. None of my settings will stick, and it will do things all on its own like it has a mind of its own. Changing themes and cursors seemingly at random. The splash screen never works, the sound that is supposed to play when you login won't work, the little checkboxes (for whatever) may or may not work, the graphics drivers are a nightmare to deal with, and on and on and on.

Ubuntu reminds me a whole lot of Mac os9. Just not too polished, not too awful stable, and real incompatible with the rest of the world.

Justin, give Open SuSe a shot or stop using Gnome. I've read of lots of problems w/ this latest distro. If you go w/ SuSe, be sure to dl the DVD not the "live CD".
