what kind of phone and what OS are you on?

advanced task killer should be a must. It allows you to kill certain tasks running in the background

Barcode scanner is also a must. You may find cool apps online and a lot of times they have that weird android barcode you can scan with your phone and it takes straight to the download page.

Dolphin web browser is another popular one. I like the stock browser on my nexus one better though.

Google Goggles lets you take pictures of stuff and it will google the picture. Pretty cool.

photoshop is free and lets you edit photos

silentmode onoff is a widget that you click to turn your phone to silent. Very helpfull.

If you got 2.1 then check out some live wallpapers. I had pong and fireworks and liked them. The planets one is ok too but quickly got boring. I have one of the stock wallpapers now, the one with the water and leaves floating around.

I had the predecessor to the HTC Magic, with Android 1.6. I loved it - predictive text/suggestions is better than iPhone imo (gives you a list of all possible words you're trying to spell, and allows you to directly add words to the dictionary), Micro SD card, etc., the only problems I had were the shape (has a slight angled jaw/chin kind of thing, made it slightly awkward at times), the size (not quite as big as the iPhone, and the few buttons it has cut down on the screen size), and that it doesn't support Microsoft Exchange.

I was bored with the iphone so I got a nexus one with Android 2.1 and I love it. You can personalize anything, multi tasking is great and the app store has alot to offer despit was apple fanbois say. Alot hate the lack of itunes but I love it. I never could stand that stupid program.

I will say Safari is a better browser than what my phone has or the popular Dolphin browser on the app store. But Firefox mobile is in development and flash is about to come out for Android so the web browsing expirience should be getting better. Also the music player on Android sucks compared to ipod but owell, it does its job and still has cover art.

Last week I switched from AT&T to Verizon just to get the Incredible. I loved the phone, thing is, I had no reception at my house and lots of dropped calls. Seems like this is an issue with the phone.

So I ported my numbers back to AT&T and ordered the Nexus One. Hopefully it will be here soon.

Ok you've got the Motorola Android. There's quite a few phones out there using the Droid OS.

You have it backwards. Android is the OS, Motorola makes the Droid telephone.

Dunno if you can add folders but you might try one called Astra or Astro file management.

Got my OTA 2.1 update for my Eris last night. I'm very impressed with everything thus far. Tried out the navigation on the way to work and it seemed to work pretty well. Can't seem to figure out the Speech - to - Text yet... anyone used that?

On my nexus one you can do speech to text in just about any program by holding down the search button. Speech works very well. and yes, the navigation is awsome. I have used it a few times and so far it has been very accurate and quick to recover if you take a unexpected turn or something.

Do you need to download anything extra for the speech to text? I noticed I had to download the voicepak for the nav.

Ok and maybe I'm understanding this wrong but is the text to speech supposed to work where I can basically have my texts read back to me if I'm driving where I don't have to look at the phone, or is it where I can basically use voice commands to open a new message, write on out using my voice, and send it?

Oh I dont know about the one that reads your texts to you. The voice recognition Im talking about is where you talk and it will type what you say. It will not read it back to you though.

Ok just wondering. I'm still trying to figure out how to get that to work. Is it in the Messages menu or is it a stand alone app?

you might try this Beta

http://blog.vlingo.com/2010/03/andro...-beta-now.html

I tested for their BB app and they gave me the full paid app free just for giving feed back and answering questions every now and then.

It started as a simple voice command app, now you can do much more and it reads emails back to you.

The speech recognition should work in just about any program, just hold the search button down for like 3 seconds and the thing will pop up prompting you to speak. I use it alot for navigation but every once in a while if I see or hear something I want to remember Ill just pull up a google window and speak it in so I have it when I get home. It works pretty good.

Just curious, what's the search button look like?

Just picked up a couple droids for me and the wife yesterday. There are a ton of apps out there. This is our first smartphones so it is all a little new. I have not messed with it much yet. She got the Motorola and i went with the incredible since it was free. My phone wont ship for a week or two so im still stuck with my old pos for a few weeks.

I was going to get the Motorola phone but i just couldnt stand the slide out and the keyboard. I figured id enjoy it more since im used to a physical keyboard. I was able to type just as fast as i can now on the touch screen.
The speech to text thing is nice and i bet i get alot of use out of it.

Now since i lost all my music i need to get some new tunes to get ready to sync to the phone.

What you might call solitude is something i look forward to.
