Power Supplies

I added two 1tb WD Black hard drives recently to my rig and it flakes and locks up every now and then after a fresh re-install of windows 7. I'm wondering if my 750watt power supply is just not enough? Will a 1000 watt do, or should I just put another power supply in my case(it can accept two)? I also plan to add a new NVidia Video card and run my 9800 for physx.

I would think a 750w would be enough to run your PC. My PC was running 2 260's, 3 HD's, DVD, H2O pump, tons of fans and some other crap on a 750w.

Here is a link to a PSU calculator that may help.

Are you overclocking your cpu? Or is your CPU getting hot? That could cause a freeze up, and sometimes a complete restart.

Yeah It's lightly over clocked. It doesn't get hot(stays around 30celcious at full load).

I did do a bios update, I have been wondering if that is it.

Using the page 4.0x3.48 posted, I'm using right around 700watts.... So I'm knocking on that door of my power supply anyway, if I add the additional video card(Nvidia 480) I'll need a 850w...

I think I might go ahead and get a 1000 watt and see what that does.

I think you'd be wise to go w/ the 1k watt so you're not running near headroom level.

Listen to my buddy, Jeff Bolton, from 6-9 AM Mon-Fri.

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

Yeah I'm going to watch for some rebates/sales on tigerdirect and newegg.. When one comes up ill pick it up. I know now to get a modular, my 750w wasn't and it still has useless wires hanging around.

Also there have been 3 bios updates since my last one 2 months ago.. Latest one released last Friday. Apparently they fixed some voltage issues in he last update.

Also, it may be worthwhile to make sure all of your accessories are working ok, and not causing your hang-ups. I have a QX-9650 SLI machine that runs like a monster, but was suffering from erratic problems. I wasn't sure if the problem was in the mobo, cpu, or in my overclocking setup. I finally figured out that it was my DVD drive. Now, the machine is solid at 4.2g, and never flinches. Just a thought.

Yeah, I've thought of that also.

I keep leading towards power supply or bios because the computer was working 100% overclocked no problems.

I updated the bios, and added two new WD black 1tb drives(suck up energy). So I'm going to start with things I changed first then go from there. I'll update the bios tonight. The the problem is still there I'll really look hard for a good deal on a 1000w+ power supply(as I can do eventually a big SLI setup if I get into heavy gaming again).
