Question Android being ported to iPhone?

http://phandroid.com/2010/04/21/omg-...-no-seriously/

OMG! Android Running On The iPhone (No, Seriously)

by Quentyn Kennemer on April 21st, 2010

Today has just been unreal! Three new Dell Android phones leaked within a couple of hours of each other, and now we’re given a treat that we never thought we’d see: Android has been ported to the iPhone. I came across this link thanks to fabled Android ROM developer Cyanogen, who simply pasted the URL to the blog posting in a tweet on his Twitter account.

The catch is that this only works on 2G iPhones for now, but this is a huge break through in Android development! Everything isn’t smooth, and not everything works (some things will need special drivers) but WiFi is confirmed to be working, and it seems functional enough to make this a notable achievement for the developer who managed to scrap this together. The developer has stated that a port to the 3G should be fairly easy, and while a 3GS port would require a bit more work, it should be doable as well.
Rob has always told me “we need someone manning the ship even in the late hours. What if the iDroid with Android 3.0 gets announced?”. Turns out, he was right (partially, anyway) and I’m just stoked to see that this is even possible. What about you guys? Do you want to see continued development for Android’s iPhone 2G port? Would you try this out on your own old iPhone (he provides detailed instructions on his blog)?

Can someone explain to me the greatness of Android? I've had an Android phone for a year and a half now, and don't really see what the big deal is.

big whoop. lack of apps, and cool factor for the Android phones. I can't conceive why anyone would want to make that change, but that's just me.

Best part of an android phone:
Google isn't trying to brick them because you aren't doing what they want.
Oh, and a little thing called flash support.

We have both in my house, and I actually prefer the Android OS. The open dev yields awesome free apps (though cydia and some other questionable stuff on the iPhone also delivers free apps). What I don't get about this is why spend the cash on the iPhone hardware and then put Android on it? For the same money you can get a more capable Android handset.

Flash support, open source, open development (it costs $25 to join the Android developer group and publish apps to marketplace vs $99 a year to publish to the App Store), you can develop Android apps from Windows, Mac, Linux, etc., you're not limited to a single carrier...

There aren't a lot of apps compared to the iPhone but Android phones have only been out a whole year and a half.

That's a possibility. But I recently looked at slates, and a Windows-compatible device of that form factor with MUCH more power and features can be found for the same price. Back to the same point - the cost of the hardware, to me, makes it not much more than a "cool, because I can" thing.

i actually support google and im not an apple fan so i'm happy about the move. i just dont like the droid UI/look/feel/functionality as much so i wouldnt move to it yet, but in the future it's good to have an alternative.
the touch screen isn't as accurate, it feels slower, it's more prone to crashing, (those could be because MOTOROLA made it).
the multiple menus to do certain things is dumb for a portable device.

flash support? like adobe flash? is this released yet? it would be a nice feature to have in browser.

open dev is good but people out there make garbage. like real big piles of shit. i would prefer the "market" not be congested with gay applications. makes it feel like... CYDIA.

what apps do you droid users use?
i cant find an f-ing app to stream the ticket.
iheartradio doesnt work. aonline radio doesnt work. cumulus is supposed to have an app but it doesnt show up in the droid market.

i tried helping my friend with an HTC hero. tried all of those then had to install dolphin browser, install aoline, use moodio to open a link. well that shit crashed his phone. fucking brilliant.

iheartradio worked fine on both the G1s we had, as well as my son's current cliq. One of the coolest apps, and I forget the name, you scan a barcode and it looks up the info online. It then fires up the GPS to find it locally and give you prices. Then it will shoot over to turn-by-turn directions to get to the store you want to buy it at.

It may be cheaper to to become a dev but you don't have any support. If you wanted to be a Dev and make money then you'd go for the iphone no matter what. More users and more downloads equal more money in your pocket. The android os will keep trailing the iphone os for a while.

Not an apple fanboy either. The only thing i have that is apple, is my iphone.

Let me get this straight. People are unhappy with the functionality of their iPhone so the answer to that is to replace the operating system with one that hinders it even more? That sounds logical! Lol.

There's a lot of support out there. http://developer.android.com has tutorials, source code, documentation on all the Java classes available in Android packages, and good information on how the OS works.

Not to mention numbers. The first Android phone was released with T-Mobile a little over a year and a half ago, while the iPhone has been out for almost 3 years. There are at least a dozen phones out running Android OS, with even more due later this year, now available with all 4 of the major US wireless carriers against just 3 iPhones on a single carrier with an insufficient network.

More phones with the Android OS on it doesn't mean they are actually good phones. The only thing wrong with the iphone is that you get dropped calls. I'm not sure what the reason is behind it but it does happen and only to iphones from what i get. Or certain areas that you lose service at.

But i mean support as to a user. If you bought an Android and wanted a certain app that the iphone has it won't run as smooth. The iphone has more apps. It feels more natural. I've toyed with the Android and I just can't see myself switching phones.

Imo if you're a dev and you wanna make money go with the iphone. If you're a user and want a wide variety of apps/games/random crap go with the iphone.

Don't talk about it! Be about it!

Android is still behind iPhone but I think they'll be able to catch up
