Hit up craigslist, tons of repair shops that'll service them.
Or, do it yourself and replace the drive.

Sounds like the laser ?

I had the same problem and took it to a place in Lewisville. They replaced the laser for $90 and everything works fine now.

I found them on craigslist "wired extreme" , if you don't find there number let me know and I'll post it for you.

I've got a parts PS3, I sold Magnus the Power Supply out of, the Drive is good too, and I'd be willing to sell it to you, it's a very simple replacement, or I can do it for you.

Ok PS3 guys...question for ya. I have for a while had a 1st gen 60gb ps3 that started overheating a lot so I kinda quit messin with it for a while. Last week while browsing a local pawn shop I found a 2nd gen 80gb PS3 that wouldn't spin up the optical drive for 75 bucks. I figured I'd take out the functional B-R drive from the 60gb and stuff it in the 80gb and have a working PS3 again. So I swapped out the drive. The drive spins up in the 80gb...but the system STILL never sees anything in it? WTF? I put the drive back in the 60gb and it works great until the system overheats. Ideas? I downloaded the latest system update on both units but the 80gb system refuses to see anything in the optical drive even though it spins up. Bad motherboard? I'm a little ticked.

not all drives are compatible in all systems. And beyond that, you may have a controller problem, not a drive problem.

Or both had shot drives?

The drive in the 60gb works fine.....the SYSTEM overheats, so I put THAT working drive into the 80gb model to see if I could get the 80gb model up and working but it still won't read discs even though it spins them up...I'm pretty sure the controller is bad on the 80gb board. The BR drive from the 80gb model is dead...I took it apart and verified that it will not spin discs (probably a bad spindle motor), although the laser does work. I also installed that drive in my 60gb PS3 and it won't spin up discs either...dead BR drive.
