I see the iPad as an ebook reader with a color screen.

The Nook and Kindle (Barnes/Noble and Amazon) are both eInk displays (grayscale) and don't even have a backlight.

I'll probably buy a 2nd gen after they work the bugs out.

Supposedly, if you get the 3G version that comes out later this month, you will be able to use it as your cell phone with the use of a bluetooth device. I think it's just too big to be advantageous as a phone. If I run to the store, I don't want to lug a big ass pad with me. I'll keep my iPhone for now as it fits in my pocket.

I think i'll wait till they make it worthwhile. Camera in the front for video conference, Flash, Bigger HDD, etc. Supposed to be a new iphone in June so lets hope it doesn't make the ipad look like a chump.

IDK I think its cool. I wouldnt buy one right now because I have a MacBook and an iPhone... and the iPad is basically those too put together... so i'm content with what I have.

it won't replace your phone and it won't replace your laptop...what exactly is the point? i guess that you could buy it for an e-book reader, but i wouldn't spend the extra money to get that over the nook, if that's all that i was going to use it for. plus, the nook comes with free 3g access. to be honest, i really don't know what all it will do, so maybe i'm looking at it wrong, but i just can't figure out a reason to buy it other than the toy factor.

I see no use for it personally. To me, it just looks like a giant iPod touch, which I've already got.

All I know is I wish I had some Apple stock right about now.

no it's not. It will not run the apps your MacBook does, but it will run the apps your iphone does.

Still no flash, no USB ports, no card readers, no external ports of any kind.

It's a nice move in the right direction, I think everyone will end up with some sort of "Padlet" in their home at some point, for newspaper reading, remote control, home automation, etc... It's definately easier to read on than an iphone, but it's missing so much.

I really want to see what HP does with the slate.

No external ports at all? That is nuts. I would have thought they would at least have some USB ports to upload pics or vids or music or something. So what the hell IS it for then? Someone explain.

it does have the basic dongle, like the iphone, with a usb connection, but no other devices can connect to it.

maybe in 5-years or so, they'll figure out a way to make it useful enough for me to buy one...i definitely don't see a use for it now.

I actually do see a use for it, if it could replace all of the following (if done correctly):

1. Need for paper media (newspaper, magazines, comics, books, etc) - I mean a real replacement, not a "web version" of the same thing.

2. A universal remote (I'd like a multi-use, multi-room, multi-device capable, even if programable, remote functionality)

3. web conferencing portal (with a stand and a front mount web cam, it becomes a very useful way to talk to friends/family without lugging an entire computer around)

4. Home automation (I know there's some apps out now for iphone, etc, but I'd like to see a real stream lined interface/modules, for the everyday user to be able to use, and remotely too) - i.e. turn on the porch light from your device, when you'll be home late, fire up the TV/DVR and set shows to record, turn off the downstairs lights from bed.

5. Other replacements around the house (shopping lists, recipe list, how to guides/manuals)

I think there are a lot of uses for a pad style device like this in the home, as your "living room/kitchen family do all".

Something along those lines at least.

You can use it as a computer if you really wanted to. Get a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and their you go. And if I heard the lady at apple right they're going to be adding something to where you can use it as a phone via bluetooth or something. Now I could be completely wrong but I THINK* that's what she said. I personally think its stupid as fuck but that's just me.

Got mine saturday, I have had every version of the iPhone so I had to get the iPad. I love it, great for streaming movies and tv shows, the HD picture is perfect! Browsing around the web is great, super fast and does everything I need it to do. But is it neccesary to have, no not at all, just something I wanted to have for fun.

Honestly i think you could of used the money for something a bit better.. something like the Slate or something useful.You could of bought a small laptop for that price and get a CD drive with usb ports and a mouse and keyboard and with a screen that would flip open that you could watch movies on,Not always have to bend your neck to look at it or always have to hold it just to watch the damn screen...You mentioned you bought every version of the iphone...You and other people to understand you dont always have to buy EVERYTHING steve jobs tells you to buy...

That's exactly what's going to happen. This thing needs a touch based OS. There have been plenty of touchscreen PC computers, and they are NOT the smooth, easy to use devices that anyone wants to lounge around the house and read, chat, watch videos on.

Someone buy one and put android on it.

I dont buy everything apple has, I dont have a mac book, I have an asus laptop that does my "computer" needs. I have had every iPhone because its my favorite smart phone to ever use. So being i love my iPhone I figured I might as well get me an iPad, its how I wanted to spend my money so I did. Did I need it.. No, did I want it.. Yes!

Windows 7 was actually created with touchscreens in mind, so it might be a viable solution on the HP Slate.

There are a few Android "slates" coming out in the next few months/quarter, that are Android based. Again, with Android based stuff, you aren't getting real applications, you're getting "android apps", just like your phone uses.

A "slate" device, in my opinion should run a full O/S with full capabilities, applications, etc. Now a major problem with this option is size/weight/bulk.

Through your iTunes account, I'm sure. The same way you would put them on an iPod Touch / iPod / iPhone.

Have any of the people saying it's crap actually used one for more than 5 minutes? If you don't need one don't get it. But I will tell you this it is perfect for my needs. I use logmein to check my work computer, and everything the iPad has to offer fits my needs.... It's fast as shit and has some amazing apps already. All I need now is a good mobile hot spot for my laptop and this....

i'm not saying that it's crap...i just can't quite figure out a need for it (for me). i'm sure that plenty of people will be able to use it for something, but (for me) it doesn't replace anything.

That is just it, it's not supposed to replace anything. I just get sick of reading how shitty it is by people that have never used it. I absolutely love it and it does everything I wanted it to do and more!

But it's not for everyone by any means... It's a device that no one needs but lots of people want...

No i don't really give a shit.. just think it is silly that people automatically assume stuff with out trying it... i promise you if you pick one up and play with it.. you will very quickly find out its not JUST like your iphone.. and you will hate to pick up your iphone after using it for a while...

So how is it different from the iPhone other than size, the fact that it can not make calls and some ipad specific apps? I thought it used the iPhone OS, so what are the differences?
