Buying Microsoft Office Suite for Windows 7

My old hard drive failed, which prompted me to buy a new one and install Windows 7. Now I'm missing all my Microsoft Office programs and I'm looking to buy the Student and Home Office package...all I really use is Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Looking online, it's like $149 from Microsoft and it looks like Staples has it for a little cheaper.

Is this the best way for me to get these 3 programs that I want? I use them infrequently, so $150 seems steep. My friends used to just give me copies of their Office Package in the past...don't know if they were pirated or what, but I can't imagine them having spent the $150 themselves.

I'm trying to do the "right" thing, and have been using ITunes instead of Limewire and paid retail for Windows 7 and Kaspersky...but I'm just wondering if there is a place to get these Office programs that I'm overlooking?

Thanks.

You could consider OpenOffice and google docs too...both are free alternatives.

Thanks very much! That's exactly the type of guidance I was looking for!

I'll investigate both before buying anything.

Thanks again.

I was able to get Office 2007 for $10 through Microsoft's HUP (Home Usage Program) because my company qualified. You should check it out to see if you qualify.

I was about to recommend that as well. Open Office is great and available over multiple OS's. Been running it on my Mac for years but not on my PC's as I have a copy of Office 2007. I wouldn't pay that sort of money for MS Office personally. Only thing I really miss with Open Office is Outlook.
