Hard drive install on lap top?

I have a HP Pavilion dv6500 with a bad H/D. I need a new hard drive installed.
Does anyone have the ability to recover info/O.S. from old H/D and install on the new H/D? New H/D is a WD Scorpio Blue. SATA 320gb Laptop has Vista home Premium, if you can't recover, can you install something?? Any help would be great. Post or p.m. some quotes please.

Thanks

I wanted to give a shout out Tx Redneck for doing am awesome job on repairing my wife's laptop!! If you need any computer work contact him!

Thanks again Bryan!

Does the HDD work at all? What have you done to diagnose it? When do you need it done?

No, it has Vista. The computer was my step-son's. He is pretty sure the HDD is/going bad. But if Vista has that option I can try that.

Go here, register ann acct and take the test from safe mode. When it's done, copy/paste the link in your reply. I'll be able to get system specific info from there to better help you.

That would be even better. I don't think the HDD is the issue, I think there's a software problem.

I forgot to mention this, when you open IE, make sure you right click the IE icon and "Run as Admin" for the test.

Yes, when it "crashes" the screen will be blue w/ a message... and a stop error code.

no it does not show that screen. When it crashed in normal mode, the screen went black and reboots and gives you the option to start in safe mode. let me try it again.

If it's just re-booting, you need to disable automatic restart on crash.

Under Windows Vista Disable automatic restart Windows Vista when you have crashes as follows:

* Click Start, then click the right mouse button on My Computer. Select Properties
* Click Advanced System Settings, then click the Advanced tab.
* Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
* Under System failure, click the checkbox next to automatically restart to remove the checkmark.
* Click OK to close the Startup and Recovery window, then click OK to close the System Properties window, then close the Properties window.

If you do not have an HP printer, uninstall all the HP Printer software and reboot. Run the PC and see if it crashes on you again.

If you DO have an HP Printer, uninstall the software, reboot, then reinstall the software from the HP site and see if it crashes.

I agree it is more than likely a software issue. Unless you have some bad sectors on the HDD. If it were me. I'd back up any important data, DITCH Vista and go with Windows 7 or go back to XP, vista was terribly unstable for me. I re-formatted every few months to avoid issues. I've been running 7 since July I think, with no issues.

No hp printer so i will uninstall any printer drivers. Has been working well. But I have not let my wife try it as a laptop, meaning it is sitting on my desk, very still. When computer boots up the hdd makes some light"knocking" noise.

The noise is typical and more or less audible w/ every lappy. After you uninstall the software, download and run ccleaner, then run disk clean up, then defrag the HDD. I've never used the built in defrag for Vista since it takes half of forever. I recommend Smart Defrag from Iobit. The choice is yours though.

After you perform those steps, open IE via right click>Run As Admin and go back to pcpitstop and retake the Overdrive test. From there, we'll see about getting it running a lil quicker.

wow that cleaner progran really helped. HDD was onlly .69% fragmented. Still wont normal boot, until i get it "warmed up" using safe mode. Windows Defender gives me an error mes. on normal boot and does not load.
could that be apart of the problem? will try the pitstop again.

I'm not real sure. I quoted two of my post above this. Enable it so you can see the blue screen or dl that utility so we can see what the error code is. That's gonna be the most prudent thing at this point.

well I disabled as soon as you said to. But it has not crash since then. It just has a hards time booting up. Regular boot it starts ups goes thru a few steps then just sits there with a blacl screen. does not try to reboot. so hit power button to turn off. then turn it back on and it gived you the option to use safe mode. I do then after a whlie I will choose restart and it boots up fine but slow in regular mode. Works fast/ great until you shut it off again. Then the B.S. starts all over again.

Have you allowed it to sit there for a lil while at the black screen to see if it gets past it?

You're more than welcome. Thanks for entrusting you computer to me. I know you could have taken it anywhere else and had the issue's addressed but you allowed me the opportunity, so thanks again.

Should you have any questions/concerns/issues, please don't hesitate to call or email me and we'll get ya squared away.
