Old computer help windows ME

I have an old computer I would like to still use/give to a friend if possible. It has a virus or somethings not right and I would like to reload windows on it or a newer version of XP or something. Its a HP 8756C I think its a 800mhz pross. and 380 mb of ram. I may be wrong. Can I buy a copy of windows XP or 2000 and load it on this old thing?

Man that's going to be a slow machine and not worth "buying" a new copy of Windows for it. Ever thought about installing Linux on it? Free and should run OK on it.

You'd prolly be better off putting a Linux distro on it considering the meager specs. It won't need any AV...that would hamper performance.

EDIT: Dangit, you beat me to it Jose.

I think its funny that people say XP wont work on that computer. I've installed XP on 350mhz PII laptops with 192 megs of ram and it worked just fine. Sure it wasn't lightning fast but it was more than adequate to do most things like surf, play music, type papers, and even burn CD's. Anything over 500mhz should run XP quite nicely and if you can bump up the RAM to 512 or more...it should run great.

XP will run fine on there, and you won't have to go through the whole Linux learning curve. It's not bad, but if you're trying to teach a "non-techie" it can be a PITA. With that said, Ubuntu is incredibly easy to get up and running and for basic needs, it's really easy to learn too.

How in the world can yall say that XP would run fine on that machine after putting all the necessary apps, av...? That pc's a turd. I just got through working on one that was newer than it(2.1 Celeron w/ 512 ram) and had to go buy memory for it because it was to dadgum slow to use. The owner thought it was a different puter. She said it was never as fast as when I gave it back to her.

I still say Ubuntu. Install it, put Flash and Java on there, configure their email(if they used Outlook) and let em rip. You'll NEVER have to worry about them infecting it, defrag, clean temp files....

If you configure it right/well, they'll never need to install anything or have to worry about using terminal.

XP will run just fine on that PC. It will be sluggish just due to the processing power and the small amount of ram put it will work just fine for casual internet surfing and word processing. I would upgrade the ram if I were you just so you will not be pulling your hair out waiting for apps like word or IE to load.

What kind of apps are you referring to that would make that not work? He didn't mention he was trying to make it a server or using it as a video editing computer.
That is more than enough computer to run XP for normal home use. Didnt realize you needed a 3ghz quad core processor with 4 gigs of ram and a 500Tb hard-drive to run Windows XP and surf the internet...WOW!!!

I tried to load a friend copy of XP and it didn't work. linux would be cool as I have never used it. I can't get anymore ram for it I think I maxed it out due to the slots it has. Can't remeber though that was 7 years ago or more. And whats AV?

Point being, that you can have any computer do what you need it to do, but it may be slower than other computers

He didn't say it needed to be a gaming computer. For basic web browsing, it will do fine. I've got 2 here at the house that are roughly the same specs and they run XP just fine.

Ask me about keeping 150 users happy on IBM 300PL's for 10 years. That's a Pentium 2 box for all you youngsters out there, running PC100 RAM. And yes, they were all upgraded to XP by the time we were able to finally get them on the trash pile where they belonged. Max out the RAM and tell them to not open too many prog's simultaneously!

I think a lot of folks on here and elsewhere seriously OVERBUILD their computers and then spend very little time using them for what they are capable of. I'm pretty sure I could build a P1 133mhz PC with 128mb of ram and Win95 that would surf the internet and type papers quite well.
