81+ gigs over 54Mbps network

Is there a faster way to x-fer that much data short of pulling the drive out of the destination machine and doing it over SATA or USB via adapter?

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

Copy to a external USB hard drive?
Can you wire both computers instead of wireless?
Take the hard drive out of one machine and plug it up in the other.

One's wired the other is wireless and both a pain in the keester to open and slave. I guess it's the price I pay for convenience.

Can't you just plug the wireless machine into the router and copy the files wired?

FastEthernet speeds compared to 802.11g speeds will be lightening fast in comparison. Wireless speeds are mostly theoretical and can only decrease with conditions. Fast/Gigabit/TenGigabit Ethernet, you're good to atleast 80% of the advertised speed. Assuming your cabling is solid and the L2/L3 devices in between can hang.

You're probably hitting the read access time on your drive anyway, copying 81GB is going to take a while regardless of the connection. Most drives are going to be between 40-90MB, and then you need to consider the write speed on the end point drive, which is going to be much less than its read depending on the data size.

I got it all done at an average speed of 2.9MBps according to the destination machine.

BTW, thanks for all the suggestions yall. I'm limited by machine location(one in the house and one in the garage), hardware on machines and the junk Fios router.

Personally would have found an eSATA drive and transferred it that way

I have an enclosure w/ eSATA but that would still entail me opening both cases....a PITB.

Oh I made it a point when I invested in my eSATA enclosures to have at least one eSATA port on each box so I could use them for such reasons. Its come in handy quite a few times.
