iphone restore w/o new firmware- Possible??

Is there a way to do a restore without upgrading to 3.1.2? I tried shutting off wireless, so itunes couldn't d/l the firmware but it says to try again when connected to internet.

Just trying to keep my tethering without the jailbreak/unlock.

Thanks in advance.

not sure if this works anymore but you used to be able to download the firmware you want and hold shift when you hit the restore button and choose the firmware from a local file.

edit: you can tether on 3.1.2.

Well... I ended up running Blackra1n and blacksn0w - way too easy not to do it. The 3.1.2 cleared up the function problems I was having and now I have more features to play with.
