iSlate

islate is scheduled for release tomorrow, quite excited to buy one, once the first few models are on the shelves for a while.

Think Apple can corner the market for a midsized tabletpc?

Im excited to hear about it but seriously, what is the big deal. A iphone with a bigger screen right? Im torn too because like I said, Im excited but dont know why. I guess its the gadget geek in me.

If I do get one it will be used as netbook and I will NOT buy one if it is going to be through a cell phone provder, especially verizon like the latest rumor suggests. There is no use having to have a iphone with att and a tablet with verizon. Also that thing will suck with 3g service, it better come 4g ready.

Well actually to tell you the truth Lason, I just want to create an apple gadget necklace.

I"m kidding, but you do bring up an interesting point, why have an Itouch, Iphone, and and Islate to go along with your Ipod? I suppose they're trying to blend the capabilities of the itouch and a netbook together. Not to mention the market for the Kindle and other palm sized readers are exploding right now. From what I hear, this Islate would have serious power, even to the extent of gaming capabilities.

BTW, there is a rumor that it will be called the iPad. Apple owns the trademark on that name and they recently took legal action to protect it.

I hope that really do call it that. I can think of a ton of jokes we'll get from that name. I'm sure that if you get the most powerful version, it will be called the MaxiPad...

Big realease today!! I will probably never own one......but then again never say never. So far I have mixed feelings about it. I guess that stems from the fact that #1 my knowledge about it is very little. And #2 I just don't see any need, currently, for me to have one!

Reading the live blog now..

Here is what I've seen thus far.. (waiting on pricing)

- called the iPAD.
- comes in 16GB and 64GB flavors (gonna verify that).
- definitely an e-reader for books using the open epub format (amazon kindle uses a proprietary format)
- plays all current iPhone apps
- has a brand new SDK for totally new apps
- NO 3G (no contracts either)
- Has WiFi (no word if it is G or N)
- plays games (EA showing off a driving game)
- no Adobe Flash (HTML 5 may render that a moot point anyways)

no pricing yet.. more to come..

- has Apple's iWork (spreadsheets, presentation, word processor) It actually looks pretty good. I think this would be fantastic for presentations to small groups..
- 1Ghz processor (looks like the CPU is made by Apple)
- 9.7 inch screen uses an IPS panel. That means it will have outstanding color replication.
- Magazine and newspaper subscriptions. (the new york times looked pretty damn good)
- half inch thick
- 1.5 lbs
- Available in 16, 32, or 64GB flash storage. (hey, the MAXiPad lives )

more to come

That's a very good question. We'll have to wait and see on that one..

Personally I'm inclined to wait for the 2nd generation of this product.

The pricing on the 16gb is tempting, but without the webcam that was rumored to be built-in and no ability to multitask at all it really kills the usability. I've got a touch but it acts as my hard drive for my car, so a portable slate type computer would have been something nice to have on trips etc. As stated by Sgt. Beavis, I'll probably wait to see what the second generation of this brings. Apple has a way of purposefully holding back stuff so they can add it to the next generation to make more money. And whoever thinks they will use this as a netbook good luck, as stated it has no multitasking.

Actually, $499 is a very reasonable price. It has an IPS display panel with LED backlighting. That alone is very high end stuff. IPS panels give you the BEST color replication out there. The TF panels in the vast majority of LCD screens pale in comparison. The other great thing is the extremely wide viewing angle of the panel. TF panels get washed out if you get to far off center. IPS panels don't have that issue at just about any angle.

That is just one reason I think it is a bargain. Look at the other slates out there and compare the prices. Nothing is going to compare from a hardware standpoint.

All that said, I do have a few disappointments.

- no GPS (come on Apple, folks would kill to have a GPS screen like that in their car)
- no webcam (skype or any other kind of video chat would have been great on this device)
- no multi tasking. (Apple didn't say that there was NO multi tasking but they didn't announce it either, so I'm pretty sure it is out)
- no replacable battery (Why on Earth does Apple insist on doing that sort of bullshit.)

Other than that, I think it is pretty kick ass, but as I stated before I'll most likely be waiting for the release of its 2nd generation, just like I did for the iPhone.

OH, and this thing doesn't "beg" for 4G. It SCREAMS for it. I think that will be in the 2nd gen, after all, neither ATT or Verizon really have their 4G networks up and running. Even Sprints WiMAX network is pretty sparse..

COLOR screen.

All other "ebooks" are grayscale.

I'll probably pick up the 32gb with wifi. I was already going to be getting a Nook but I put it on hold until the announcement.

If you're primary reason for buying is to use it as an ereader, then I say go for it. IMO it is worth the extra cost when compared to any other ereader on the market. I also like that it uses the open ePub format. My only question is whether or not it will allow you to import ePub books from other distributors.

The prices are not bad at all. I was really expecting $1000+ given apples track record. I dont know if I will be getting one or waiting on 2nd gen like stated above in hopes it will come with 4g and more hard drive.

Honestly, I may pick up a wifi model because we need another netbook type computer in the house. I will wait though to hear the reviews. If this wont support flash then Im out. Thats unexcusable and wont serve as a good netbook alternative without flash support. Same with multitasking, although I suspect thats an easy fix but will slow it down.

I can deal with safari but I would prefer they opened it up to firefox.

It's just a giant iPod touch with optional 3g. It can't multitask and you can't install anything that doesn't come from the appstore. No thanks.

eh, im aware of the differences between IPS and TN but i hardly think the slate needs TN.

i'd rather them put in a cheaper display with a higher refresh rate if that means a lower cost.

i've been thinking of getting a nook as well...free at&t 3g service is a pretty cool feature. in fact, i would have bought one when i was at barnes and noble a short while back, but they said that they were on back order, so i decided to hold off for a bit. they had just come out, so i'd rather wait to see if there's any problems with them before i get one anyway.

IMHO, this is what the Touch should have been. The itouch was fine, but it was jsut an iphone without the phone. That was the failed device. People compare it to the itouch as a negative but that's flawed. it's BETTER than the itouch.

Smart homes or other home automation systems already have a wifi/bluetooth connection ability, so now you have the potential to have an iPad that can control your entire home without having to fire up a laptop or desktop PC.

Eventually I see TV's and other media devices utilizing bluetooth instead of IR to get around the line of sight issue which would basically assualt and destroy the high end remote control market (Marantz, etc). Imagine being able to control all your media devices, program your Tivo/DVR, and adjust settings all from a single 9" LCD screen from anywhere in the house.

Add in the ability to lay back in a comfy chair and surf porn with only one hand. Not have a halfkeyboard/halfscreen laptop of heat sitting in your lap. I don't know about you, but I can never get comfortable balancing a 6lb laptop on my lap or chest when I'm trying to relax.

I'm not excited over the iPad itself as it's existing technology - what gets my jubblies going is the potential that it opens up for other areas.

One of the home automation companies that we install already had an iphone app to control your home and they also offer a 10" touchscreen LCD remote(wifi). Their remote is $2400 - the app is $300(i think). The app has all of the functionality of the remote. When i saw the ipad demo and the price point, I instantly said "well, we're not gonna sell any of those 10" touchscreens anymore!"

$500 for an ipad + $300 for the app > $2400 remote that ONLY works for the house

Well Im bummed the iPad doesnt fit what I need. I read something speculating this is typical Apple marketing at work. They leave off the most obvious of things to sucker people into buying it then offer a Gen 2 a year later with some of the obvious features in it, presenting them as "new" and getting those same suckers to upgrade. Seems right on par with the iphone except some of those features (MMS in particular) were given free in a update so I dont know how much truth that holds. Given Apples track record though, its pretty accurate.

Anyway, after looking at other tablets to find my netbook alternative I ran across this thing. Its not a tablet but rather a "gaming" netbook. Im digging the backlit keyboard most of all and the price is under $1000 which is pretty nice considering its got alienwares name on it.

they'll be able to do the exact same things a jailbroken iphone can do... which isn't enough for a device that takes up the same space as a netbook

ahhh, see i wasn't aware you already had hands on experience with one...do tell?

it was announced, they showed maybe 8 things that CAN be done with it, unless you can see the future or have one already then you don't know that till it actually comes out. which can very well prove you right, but we don't know that yet.
