Replacing Bluray drive in PS3

I have read that you can swap the drive but the original optical drive is married to the system. So the new drive may play movies but wont play games.

Anyone been there, done that?

let me know if you want me to take a look at it. I've recently started working on these as a hobby, and have good resources to get them fixed.

So is there some truth to this then? Is there some special menu you have to get into to be able to re-marry the mainboard to the new drive for game access?

Looks like there are several of these broken available that can be had pretty cheap. PS3's make kick ass Bluray players

a lot of them don't need the whole blu ray player replaced, just the laser

but to answer your question, yes and no, replacing with the exact same model tends to work just fine, but there are ways to get around it for the others
