dvd rw install help

If anybody can offer some help I would be most appreciative:

A friend dropped off their old computer to me, its loaded down with tons of crap and I want to format and reinstall windows. The dvd drive is not showing up my computer, nor is it showing up in the device manager. I opened the case to ensure it had an ide and molex cable attacked to it which it does, and both of those cables are attacked to motherboard / power supply. With my limited knowledge I decided maybe the drive itself was bad, so I removed it and placed in the drive from my comp which I know works just fine, but still am unable to have windows find it when I boot or in device manager / my computer. I am stuck and have no clue how to get this to work.

Are you sure the DVD drive works?

Can you check the BIOS to make sure it is being recognized?

I burned a dvd-r 4.7gb disk on it literally 5 hrs before trying to install it into that machine. I tried a couple of times to get into the bios and couldnt. Each time before windows starts to load theres an option to press F2 to enter setup, which I assume is the bios, but no matter how many times I press F2 it just takes me to the windows select screen ( for some reason they had their hard drive partitioned like 5 times, each with its own instance of win xp installed on it )

IDE port on the MB could be bad, but that's just a guess without seeing it myself.

Yes you can run them off the same cable. Just set the DVD to slave and make sure the hard drive is set to master.

Strange that you can't get into the BIOS, have you tried a different keyboard? Are you getting power to the DVD drive? Can you eject, etc? Can you boot off of it (before entering into Windows, some systems have a seperate key to change boot sequence without entering the BIOS like F11). Also try different Ribbon Cable, power cable, etc. If all else fails, buy a new one, they're extrememly cheap now days.

I removed the hard drive ( because the ide cable was too short to reach the cd drive ) and have the hard drive and cd running off the same ide cable that the hard drive was origionally running on and as soon as i turned it back on it recognized my cd drive as a slave drive. So I just finished formatting and am 1/2 way done installing win xp on the machine. So it appears the problem was / is the part on the motherboard that the ide cable connects to for the cd drive. Once win xp is finished I wont be able to put it all back together unless i leave out the cd drive or get a longer ide cable or some kind of extension, but at any rate the problem appears to be solved and I greatly appreciate all those that offered insight and advice on this matter.

I think the keyboard I got with it is partially not working because on the first attempt to install win xp i couldnt press the F8 to agree to the liscense to begin the install, once i swapped out the keyboard it went going just fine so I am guessing my inability to get into the bios is probably because F2 isnt working either. Its a wierd keyboard, has way too many keys and extra buttons on it so I would have replaced it anyways lol.
