Iphone + Tethering + Carrier Settings Upgrade...

Ok, so ever since I updated my firmware to 3.1.2 I have been dropping calls and losing signal like nobodys business! I bet I drop 8 - 10 calls a day. The signal just goes away, says No Service, then comes back....

Every time I open Itunes it tells me there is an update for my phones carrier settings.... If I update the carrier settings, will I lose my tethering and jailbreak? Will it help with all these dropped calls I'm having?

You must have a 3G phone? All my buddies with 3G's are having this problem. My 3GS works fine.

nope, its a 3GS.... I just did the carrier settings update and tethering is still working.... took it from AT&T 5.5 to 5.6... so we'll see if that fixes the issue.

Try deleting the carrier file that you installed and reseting the network settings...

I had all kinds of crap going on with my phone, biggest being virtual voicemail not working. I removed that Benq carrier file and my phone doesnt drop calls and my virtual voicemail works again. I have tried all the tricks to get around having to remove the carrier file and tethering and none worked.

You can update carrier settings and not lose your jailbreak...
But if you update or restore firmware you will lose jailbreak...

As far as tethering goes just go Here with the phone and download your tether settings...
CLICKY

after you update carrier settings...

Yep go to the clicky I made in the previous link with you iPhone and download the correct AT&T US file. And you can tether. Make sure you select the right one. There is alot of other carriers and countries in that drop down list.

i went ahead and updated to 3.1.2 and installed the new mobileconfig directly to my iphone and tethering is working like a champ. here is a website that will walk you through it:

http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/11/...ning-os-3-1-2/

if you're already jailbroken/unlocked, just start at step #8.

bringing this back up.....

Tethering was working on my 3.0 JB before I updated using that "ben" profile. Tried to use another profile I got from cydia, but it killed my Vmail. I then deleted all profile and reset network and installed the profile from link below, which got my Vmail back. The tether option never went away thru all of this. I still couldn't tether, but Vmail was working. So now I'm trying to get tether back,so I deleted profile(link below),and reset my network. I lost the tether option and installed the profile again and did a hard reboot. I don't get a tether option now. WTF

I got profile from.... http://m.peacefulinsanity.com/Tether.mobileconfig

I was 3.0 with the Benm carrier. Had to switch to 3.1.2 for the restore.

Black ra1n/sn0w to bring tethering back and the peacefulinsanity for the correct carrier for my VVmail.

That's the easiest way that I've found to keep tethering and everything else.

What did you use to jailbreak?
I'm not an expert by any means, but blackra1n is the program that I used to jailbreak.

BTW - apparently iphone OS 3.1.3 is out today and will kill your JB... for now.
So hold off on updating your firmware.

I used blackrain to JB,but when it came out,it didn't have the tether option. Now it does,so I thinking of using it again, but only use the tether option. Was wondering if this will mess it up or not using blackrain again?

not sure what you are saying when you say "only using the tether option".
i didnt think blackra!n has anything to do with tether.

as far as i know, you use blackra!n to jb only.
once you jb, you download a profile to unlock the tether option.

then there is a seperate app method that HmoobMike posted in the other thread.

The latest blackrain has a new option to set up tether. When I did mine awhile back, all blackrain had at the time was cydia, rock, and snow. Now it has the tether option. Blackrain was used to jailbreak, but then you could go back into it and choose which ever option you want to install after the JB. For me to get those options would mean for me to use BR(latest one)and JB again to get to new options. That is the only other way I know that I haven't tried, just not sure if it will mess up using BR again.
