Netbook/Notebook recommendations

Buying the GF a Netbook or notebook. My limit was $400 plus tax and accessories. I was going to just get her a netbook, but there are a few laptops that are down to the $400 dollar range. The most she will be doing is Itunes, and microsoft word. I will get a external HD for the media.

I can't make up my mind on which one because there are so many choices.

I bought my mom the Dell Mini. She loves it for browsing the internet.

I have the Acer One with 3G w/ solid slate drive, intel atom 1.6ghz. I really like it. Runs windows 7 like a champ.

Both are under $400.

I have an Acer Aspire One netbook and my wife and I use it everyday all day. If you can get past the shitty mouse pad they are a real bargain. You just have to factor in a external disk drive if she will need it. We just put whatever disks we NEED on the netbook onto a thumbdrive using our desktop but externals are cheap enough.

Are all netbooks solid state drives? How fast is the load rate when they are a solid state drive?

No, they aren't...usually only the smaller 8"- 9" units are SSD's or the cheaper ones.

My kids each have an Acer Aspire One D250 and they are "okay" for kids or older people... but if you are used to using a normal laptop or desktop...the speed decrease and screen size will get to you. I have tried using them because of the portability, but I just go back to my 13.3" Dell laptop.

tigerdirect.com has some fantastic prices currently for netbooks.. if you don't mind re-certified. Most of them still have a warranty though.

I know Acer, HP and Dell make good netbooks.

The Asus they are advertising for $259 doesn't look like a bad deal though.

They have at least one at the WM on 287 in Arlington.

After you get it...upgrade the RAM really cheap.

I just bought my wife the Dell Mini and it has worked great. my only complaint is the mouse button beling part of the actual mouse, it is probably something that will just take some getting used to but I dont like it so far. everything on the machine is great though. you can buy through Bing and get 5% bing cashback too (I got almost $70) back on hers

70 / .05 = $1,400. I hope to god you didn't spend that much on a dell mini.

Best Buy has an Acer Aspire with 3gb RAM and 160gb HD for 299. Picked up a couple on Tues. The price is good through Sat, but they were going quick, I believe. Good luck!

Yeah but I assume that is a netbook of some sort, right?

They told me they were sold out everywhere. I would have bought it if they had it.

EDIT: This is a little off topic but I need a laptop repair shop, in Arlington, that will fix my Compaq Laptop. The wifi doesn't work even after replacing the wireless card. I don't want to create a thread for a quick question.

My gf's parents bought one yesterday around noonish at a Best Buy in Arlington.

You're right though. Looks to be sold out now. BB's new ad comes out every Sunday. I bet they will have a similar deal next week. I missed out on the BF deals, and have been shopping around since.

The netbooks don't appeal to me. Small screen and no cd/dvd drive just kills it.

Also, BB had some sweet package deals. They had a decent HP, in fact, I think it was like that one posted above. Reg price was $450, but they had it packaged with a wireless mouse and a case for like $410. Not bad.
