Setting up my first server!!

Ok guys I am finally going to try and set up my first web server. Has anyone done this before? I've read a lot through google and I think this is the setup I'm going for. Let me know what you think:

The computer is an old AMD Athlon 3200+
3gb ram

Software I'm going to try and use:

Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit
SQL server 2008
google will be my dns

Now, I have a friend who's telling me to use Ubuntu and Apache.

I'm VERY new to this and that's why I decided to learn on Server 08. Any ideas? Suggestions? Right now Microsoft OfficeLive is hosting my website but I want to set it up myself and host it at home.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Why the fuck do people insist on server and all those other peice of shit VMWare apps? ESX/ESXi is the best VMWare app out there IMO.

The only caveat is review the HCL prior, but if you want to run some VMs using VMWare products ESXi is where it is at.

I have a basic dual core machine, 4 gigs of ram and run....
-Unity Connections
-Call Manager 7.0
-Windows XP w/Torrents 24x7
-IPCC Express
-Cisco Unified Presence
-One or two test platfroms from time to time

I always have them all up and they run acceptable. With other options it was only realistic to run 2-3 TOPS, usually just 2.

Anyway, I specifically did not mention the other VM apps out there from MS...etc...etc since I only briefly used them and did not get detailed with them. ESXi is awesome though for sure.

esxi is the shit, but the hcl is what kills alot of people's chances to toy with it at home. I agree though, run esxi if you got the hardware for it.

Yeah, but ya know how it is...with some research you can build a fair inexpensive system to do it. Main things for me were the NIC and something else...can't remember. Ebay stuff for cheap worked.

Edit: Remembered, it was the sata controller. Got a sub 30 dollar one from newegg that worked fine.

I wont ever argue for someone wanting to learn but hosting a site might get a bit much. Most home connections have a bad upload so your pages will be served up slow.

Windows vs Linux if you are learning shouldn't matter.

Wohoo!

I got my web server up and running! It took me forever to try and get the settings.

Here's what I used:

Server 2008 64 bit R2
IIS
SQL Server 2008

I have my domain through godaddy and my dynamic dns is through freedns.

Now, to figure out how to make a Flash website....
