I just scanned the article but didn't see how much of an improvement one could expect. Would it be worthwile?

In general nothing. In the DFW area 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1 are fine.

When I ping 8.8.8.8 I get 50-60ms response time, with 4.2.2.2 stead at 10-15ms. I notice no delay/lags in the actual resolution of the names either.

My '03 Sold.

I just go with whatever DNs has the fewest hops. Typically ISP 99% of the time.

I don't see the point - not everything google does is top shelf, not matter what the media says. Too many people seem to think that anything with a Google or i prefix is the second coming.
