Burning video to HD quality

I am in need of a lesson on this subject. I am about to buy the Sony HDR-XR500V, and I was going to see how easy it will be to burn a high definition DVD. I could be wrong but isn't it possible to record in HD, and then burn to a normal DVD with that HD footage, it will just take up more room on the disc making for shorter videos
