System help please

Just noticed this and I'm not sure why my system is only 3 of 4 gig of RAM is usable, any ideas?

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said,"Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the Promised Land." Now Obama has stolen your shovel..., taxed your asses, raised the price of camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

Check in task manager and see how much is cached vs available. It might have a gig cached, which is ok, it helps w/ Vista's performance.

go to a command prompt and run dxdiag, tell it yes you want to check the drivers

i bet when you go to the Display tab, you'll see your video card showing approx. total memory 1000 + video memory.

I'm pretty sure this is by design in Windows 7/Vista, that allows DirectX and Aero to use some of the system memory for Aero features.

System Mem says 4096MB on the first page, Display says 1779MB. Is that what you're expecting it to show?

exactly what i was expecting it to show

dxdiag is the DirectX diagnostic tool. Basically because you are using all of the "cool" features of the O/S, i.e. Aero, about a GB of your system memory is already used at boot up to enable these features. You may not be using that memory, but it's set aside strictly for this purpose.

Congrats! So far I've loved every bit of Windows 7, I'm still on the beta version but not once have I run into a problem with it.

Does it show all of your memory as available in system preferences?
