Stop keeping your xbox in the microwave over while you use it.

sounds like you're keeping your xboxs in a bad location. I've had 2 since launch my launch console red ringed twice and I moved it to where the ac could blow on it and put my elite there as well with no issues

Just curious for folks who have the biggest problems with them. Do you have them setting horizontal or vertically?

I prefer my electronic devices to work regardless of where I place them (within reason: no Siberia, no Sahara).

Stop leaving it on when you leave the house or when you go to bed.

Pretty sure mine has some feet for vertical. I maybe wrong, but I could've sworn I seen them and considered doing so.

if the fans are the kind that draw power from the xbox, that could be the reason for it failing. If they have an independent power cord then location can be the issue.

You gotta be careful not to jostle it at all if a game is spinning while the console is standing vertically. If you do, the disc will start to wobble and the laser will scrape a broad ring on the disc rendering it unusable.

xbox reliability is crap. I sent my last one in 3 times and for the RROD and the last time it screwed up MS told me to take a hike because it wasnt RROD'ing, just video card overheating. I took it apart and did the x-clamp mod and it worked great for a year or so then recently took a dump on me again.

I just paid for a MW2 360 so hopefully Ill have better luck with that one. I agree though, PS3 reliability seems flawless compared to the 360's.

I had mine repaired about a year and a half ago. Don't really know how the unit was treated before since it was my friends. I got it from him with the red ring, sent it in to microsoft, and got a refubished unit. I keep it vertical and it's been fine. It's even on the carpet, which I probably need to do something about. Knowing my friend though, he probably treated the original unit like shit like he treats all of his other posessions.

I actually had this happen to my Gears of War disk when it was horizontal as well.

do you have the newer smaller nm processor, or the older model? More recent ones are more dependable.

That makes very little sense to me. If one of its marketed uses is as a DVD player I would expect it to be able to perform that task without having to worry about it fucking up.

Goddamn, I love my PS3 that I never use.

thanks man, i just recently turned mine on after having not used it for several months and am getting the 3 red ring thing they are talking about. I was hoping not to have to send it in to get fixed. I will try to just do it myself.

So you have to baby it, mod it, upgrade the fan, maybe not use it as a DVD player, and chances are it's still going to break?

Well shit, why in the hell did I get this PS3 that's run flawlessly for two years. This Xbox thing sounds like a lot more of an adventure.

I had to send my original 360 in over a year ago.. Other then that it's a champ, it's on nearly all the time.

I had one go out, bought the elite and barely play now, no time. bu so far no problems, the PS3 does seem more reliable.

i know the PS3 is the best because of all it can do and how reliable it is, but you got to think who you are dealing with when it comes to the xbox. Microsoft knew about the heatsinks and how it would heat up everything for playing to much, if they fixed that then no one would buy a warranty. I asked a xbox employ on the phone what they do with an xbox when it is sent in with the 3RROD and all they do is clean between the heatsinks and put it back together. Microsoft could have fixed the problem but they didnt.

My first xbox went out and xbox took it and "fixed" it, a month later when my warranty was out it broke, i bought an xbox 360 elite a year ago and after fixing it the way you should then it never broke on me.

First thing you do is the spacing on the heat sinks
then upgrade the fan to a quite fan you can buy on ebay for $5
the elite's cd rom is upgraded with a nice one but if you have a white one just buy a elite cd rom off ebay for like $10
FIXED

My first game system was a playstation, then playstation 2, then slim, then xbox, then xbox 360, I want a PS3 because they rock!!!!

Plus, with the XBOX, you get to pay for batteries forever for your controllers, pay extra to get the totally awesome HD-DVD drive, pay through the nose to upgrade the hard drive, pay to access online gaming, and have the world famous customer support that Microsoft provides!!! How can you not like a package like that?
