Can a media center pc be built for $500?

Assuming the budget is $500 and I have the harddrive(s) and case?

The mother board would need to be atx and the goal is to build a machine that can store backed up or possibly ripped movies to play over the hdtv. I would want a video card or board with a decent output over comppnent or hdmi and with optical audio. What parts would you use in the following categories?

Mother board
Processor
Ram
Video card
Sound card
and Os to work with xbmc

shouldnt be hard...

I have a cheap video card with HDMI out and does just fine with 1080p. It was like $35 (was on sale). Buy a cheap motherboard and get a decent sound card. 2-4 gigs of ram is cheap these days and get you a copy of Windows 7 for $30.

I think the hang up is the price on the OS. That is never cheap.

Get you a mobo proc combo w/ PCIe slot, a dual core a couple gigs memory and any ATI 4xxx series card and you'll be set. You should be able to do that for WAY less than 5 bills. For the OS, find someone w/ a copy of XP MCE they're not using/going to use.

XP MCE for 25 buck right here.

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

It can easily be done. Pick up a cheap used dual core motherboard/processor/memory from one of the nerds over at hardforum.com. I was able to get a very nice E6600 system w/ an intel board and 4GB of ram for just $90 a year and a half ago. Then all you need is a cheap case/psu, decent video card, and an RF/IR controller. I would be willing to bet it could be done for $350-400 and end up with a very powerful system.

I don't think you want linux on an HTPC, it's a gigantic pain in the ass, especially when it comes to IR/RF controllers.

I must be computer retarded now. I tried to go into the for sale section and couldn't understand half the shit in there.

I'm trying to build a "cheap" computer for my HD video editing.
