windows 7 won't recognize usb drive

I'm running windows ultimate 7 64 bit eval copy build 7100. I plug a usb drive into my xp laptop and the drive comes up fine. I disconnect and plug it into my win 7 host and it shows up as an unknown device. I can't find it in disk management to put associate it with a drive. Anyone else having this problem?

It happens to be a well thought out and reasoned dissertation on drug use and a lyrical cost/benefit analysis of various kinds of drugs, drawing the conclusion that beer is the best of them all.

I used Win 7 x64 RC for a while, and am now using Win 7 x64 RTM with no disk recognition problems at all. What kind of USB drive is it? Do you have the drivers properly installed?

Both USB drives are WD passports. The host will recognize my Iphone but not my passport drives. According to WD these drives require no drivers so there are none available through WD. This is the Win 7 Release Candidate I'm running on. I like the new platform, just not digging the failure to recognize my usb drives.

Google it, I just read a Maximum PC magazine that mentioned this specific thing. Don't remember if they said it was fixable or not, but it is a known issue.

I've googled it. Gone through and tried several things and to no avail none of them work. Just thought someone might have had a similar problem and might have any new ideas.

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

Be nice to see if they are all jacked up or just that one. For troubleshooting purposes.

It's funny, I have a cheapie that's never failed me no matter what OS, from XP- Mac and all flavors in between. I think his is an OS issue.
