Exclamation Hard drive problem!

Well, my 500GB Seagate is acting up on me. This HD has all of my music, photos - most are very important family photos, and a bunch of other stuff.

Last night I find as I open My Computer, that windows is asking for me to format this HD. It's apparently acting as a new HD. I open up a partition program, and it also recognizes this HD as a new one, and wants me to format. Where the hell did all of my data go? I'm not going to format this and kiss my stuff bye. I have WAY too much to lose. Granted, I did back it up as of a month ago, but I have since added to the collection since then.

?

Edit: This was not a primary drive. It was a secondary drive that served as a data only drive.

Not for sure if this will work, but i had a HD that the windows went corrupt on, i bought a new HD and installed windows and ran my old HD as a slave drive, i was able to access my old files off the old hard drive. So try that.. it may or may not work.

Ah, it wasn't a program drive, it was only a secondary data drive.

well in that case, i have no idea what in the hell happen or how to recover your lost data, but i am sure there is a way to recover it, nothing just disappears.

on an episode of mythbusters they had hard drives that went bad, and they tested if freezing them would allow you to recover lost data..

It worked!, they froze the drives, plugged them up, and while they were frozen/cold they worked and they were able to obtain lost data, but once they warmed up, they shit the bed again.

Sometimes its as easy as unplugging the IDE cable, and replugging. I would try some really basic stuff first, before I started really digging into it.

You could remove it from the BIOS and then let the BIOS find it again, or even plug into another pc and see if you can access the drive on another pc. Heck, even the ide slot on the motherboard could be bad.

From what I gather, the hard drive is still working fine, it just 'lost' the format. Im not sure how the fuck that happened.

It's a SATA drive. I'll try a different SATA slot. I do not have another PC that I can access here at home. Just this one.

Did you throw it across the room, drink a beer or two and say a few four letter choice words? Won't work till you follow these procedures.

Seriously, I would pop it in another computer, friend or family members, and see what happens. You might be able to take it to Frys and I think they can hook it up and see if they can see the data.

Try one/some of these on it and see if they pull up your data.

ntfs? your master file table probably went haywire. data still exists.

i used a program called getdataback a few years ago. it scans the drive and finds the data. takes a while.
i got it for free but wound up paying for it after since it saved my data.

I have a maxtor HDD that does exactly the same thing from time to time. I just simply unplug it from the computer and the wall. Restart the computer then plug it back in, and everything is fine. Not sure how this happens but ocassionally it does. Hope this helps.

As long as you don't format, and nothing else goes wrong, you should still be able to recover most/all of your data. There are a ton of free apps out there for pulling data off. At least you don't have the click of death.

FYI, for the future, you may want to buy a RAID controller and do a simple RAID1 config for your backup disks. My mobo came with an onboard RAID controller, so I put 2 1.5TB drives on it for my backups. One dies, the other is fine.

I figured that what it was but I didn't attempt to fix the MFT. Just ran my recovery tool and he is sending the data to another drive. I actually had to do this earlier this week for another person.
