I am thinking about a Netbook for my kids...

I really like both the HP and Dell, is there a compelling reason to go with an ASUS, Acer or MSI ??

Help a brotha out...

TIA

I personally think they are all about the same. Most have the same specs. Atom processor, 1GB ram and 160GB HD. Screen size is about the only difference. I would go with the one you can get for the best price. I don't think brand really makes a difference.

QFT! As far as netbooks go they are all about the same (specs, quality, etc.), I would personally go with an acer aspire for two reasons. 1) the price is right on them and 2) I have actually seen someone load mac osX on one, makes a very inexpensive mac air. I sell the Acer, Asus, sony and HP brand netbooks and by far the Acer is the best seller due to it's price point and I rarely get returns on them.

I would recommend only dell, and the reason behind that is having repaired several in the last few months, none of them were dells, the only dell I saw was one I was installed Windows 7 on. I trust dell because of a long experience with their products, and they have good customer service.

The only problem I have had with my first Acer, was that I dropped it(waist high and it was running), it still ran for another 2 months before the HDD gave up. I bought another and use it everyday for work(in varying conditions) and have had no manufacturer caused problems. My only pet peeve about it is the trackpad/mouse buttons take some getting used to. Acer included a small wired mouse with the second AAO I bought. Also the 8.9" was on clearance for $248 at wally-world the other day.

My GF has a MSI Wind and she'd sway you that way. She has XP/OSX/Linux(and I think Vista or W7) loaded on it. She uses her everyday(more for fun but some for work) and has had no problems with it.

I didn't consider the Dell solely based off of my experience with my $3000+ XPS laptop(that cooks itself if not externally cooled - but that's another story). I haven't heard anything bad about Dell netbooks; but the service, or lack there of, that I received on the XPS was enough to make me look past them.

The biggest difference between the makes I have read about was finding hardware drivers if you are looking to dual boot with Mac OSX.

I would lean towards the Dell. I've had an Acer in the past, and wasn't too happy with the quality (screen and cd drive both went out). Acer's are usually cheaper, but there's a reason for that as well as they aren't as nicely made as some of the more established mfgers.

The new 10.1" Acer for $298 at Wal-mart is the best deal. LED, 160GB HD, faster processor than the 10.1" Dell listed above.

I don't think there's much if any difference in quality between the Acer/Dell et al, Acer is working really hard to become a big player in the netbook arena.

Acer AOD-250 is the model number.

The Dell Mini 9 will install OS X with no problems. Pretty well documented with plenty of "how to" articles on the internet. My only problem is having the 8GB SSD which is my only limiting factor (got a 32GB SSD on the way) for trying either OS X or Win7 on my Mini 9.

All that being said, I've been happy with the Dell but sure any of the other brands will work just fine for you.

The acer is absolutely better. A lot of good reviews for it as well. It's a nice piece.

Hubba Bubba, they are both Acers!

I see no difference except this...

Yours (Walmart) - $298 - 10.1" - 160GB HD - LED screen

(Sams) - $219 - 8.9" - 16GB HD (8GB SSD + 8GB SD card

Is the Walmart unit that much better for $76 more? hmm..I will have to find out.

Yes, bigger HD, better LCD (led), faster processor, better screen size (I believe the 8.9" is a little too small, I think 10.1" is a happy median - YMMV). Better mobo and embedded features. You can get the 8.9" version with the 160GB for $248 at Wal-mart.

I also believe you can find the $298 one at Wal-mart for around $270 online, give or take.

Buy a triple play verizon fios bundle(fios phone, tv, and internet) and get a free coupon for $300 to use to purchase an HP netbook, or anything else on HP's site.

PM me if you want to know more about it.

Nice advertising ^.

You can get the new 11.6" Acer at wal-mart for $399 with 2GB of RAM, or $349, with 1GB of RAM and better warranty at Costco. Perfect size for a netbook in my opinion.

I've had a dell mini 9 for a while and would recommend it.

With kids I wouldn't do anything but a solid state drive. It will take more abuse than a standard drive with spinning platters.

I have to agree with this statement. I purchased my Acer Aspire One brand new for $220. LED backlights will never go out (I am not sure if the other brands use LED or CCFT/ CCFL)

Be sure to get the 10.1" netbook, I have it and it's still pretty tiny. Oh and also be sure to check which brands come with what battery. Acer includes a 6 cell battery in theirs, others may not. And trust me there is a HUGE difference between 3 cell and 6 cell...my 6 cell just reached the 6 hour mark before it died in the Atlanta airport after being delayed for what seemed an eternity.

I am very happy with my Acer, my bro-in-law wants one after playing with mine and my wife wont give it back on trips.

Decent gaming rigs too...

I would def. recommend it. I had to download VLC after some Sliders episodes were lagging on the netbook. VLC is awesome.

MSI Wind U123 is a badass little netbook. I've seen em as cheap as 300 for the basic model, but the full feature model is around 360 or so w/ free shipping from several ebay stores. Basic model has a 160g hard drive, wifi b,g,n..6 cell batt, LED backlit screen, 10.1 " screen. Full loaded model (U123-003) adds bluetooth, and a 9 cell battery. So far it has the longest battery life of all netbooks made and also comes with the newest intel Atom N280 processor which has a higher bus speed and also runs at 1.66ghz.

Not a good deal at all...

For $30 more you can get the current model (D250 vs D150) that is NEW not refurb and has LED backlighting at Walmart.
