Laptop mouse locking up

Recently my laptop's hard drive crashed and I lost pretty much everything. I had a new one installed and it was like having a brand new computer again. I continued to download the necessary programs (virus, spyware, ad-aware, etc.) and started noticing that my touchpad mouse would just lock up shortly after start up.

We thought that the program Zone-Alarm was the culprit due to the almost exact same problems we were having on our desktop PC, so I uninstalled Zone-Alarm and thought the problem was fixed.

Until now. I can be surfing the internet on the laptop and just in the middle of anything, it just stops. Stops loading, stops moving, everything. On occasion I have been able to plug in my travel drive and when that screen pops up, the mouse will move again. It's almost like it has to recognize something else trying to load before it unlocks itself. But it doesn't solve the problem everytime.

Any ideas on why this is happening, or any ideas on how to fix it??

If youy would, go to pcpitstop.com, register then take the full test. When it's done, copy/paste the results in your reply. It'll give us an idea as to what's going on proggy wise.

Listen to my buddy, Jeff Bolton, from 6-9 AM Mon-Fri.

Obamanomics = Trickle Up Poverty

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

do you have another mouse to plug in and try when that happens? Anything in your event logs? What type, model mouse? Keyobard work during that? Or is it like a whole system lockup?

I've tried plugging in another mouse. Sometimes it works, sometimes no. Like i said it's like the comp has to recognize something else trying to load before it will work. No keyboard keys work white its locked up. Not even CTRL+ALT+DEL. Its like the whole thing is just frozen. You can still hear the fan and everything running though.

Can't do the pit stop thing at the moment because I'm on the desktop, not my laptop. I get so frustrated with it locking up, so I use the PC.

I'd definetly take the route Tx Redneck is suggesting. It does seem hardware related, but you say the drive was replaced. Are you sure it is a new drive? What your describing sounds an aweful lot like a bad drive.

Anyway, the problems you're having will be better fielded by the folks over there as they'll have more experience/patience for these things. (I'm a network guy and just try to help with what little PC stuff I know)
