Computer idiot needs some help....

my laptop now reads
"Windows could not start becasue the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM

Select "r" at the first screen to start repair.


i cannot find the said cd?? what to do now??? if you can help please make the directions idiot proof.

Do you have your install disc and is it XP?

i had all the crap that came with it in the little black dell laptop case. i have since thrown the case away so no i dont have the disc and it is window xp home edition, or so it says n the back of the laptop.

your boot sector is fucked up, usually that means it's format time... do you have any absolutely cherished information on that system, or would you be satisfied with a reformat and new OS on there? You can try to repair it, but that usually doesn't work.

chkdsk /r
