built a new rig

so my desktop i have been using was a computer i built back in 2002. the computer works great but i finally hit the limit on what the AGP card could handle and couldn’t play any new games. the old setup was an amd 3200, 2 gig ddr, 2 120gb hard drives, and a nvidia geforce ti4600.

so i built this:
Intel Core i7 920 processor
MSI x58 Platinum mobo
XFX nvidia geforce 9800gtx+ vid card
6gb DDR3 1600
wd 320 GB primary hd
1TB secondary hd
LG dvd+/-rw
ocz 600w power supply
antec three hundred case
xigmatek cpu cooler with 92mm fan

microcenter had pretty competitive prices on almost all the stuff i needed. i had to use newegg and tigerdirect for memory and video card however. total build price was just under a grand. the only thing I reused was the lcd monitors.

so far everything works great. im having to using vista ultimate 64bit but i stripped it completely down. no overclocking yet, i might just push it a bit just to see how stable and what kind of temps it sees.

3dmark vantage score all stock was P8447. my gpu didn’t scored surprisingly low IMO (6703), but my cpu scored 38452.

yea, the cpu stock blows away anything i have used before but i dont mind overclocking a bit. i'm not going to up the voltage any, i'm more interested in reliability and the setup lasting a long time. with the xigmatek cooler on it now it's running around 26*C after the bench test.

sure send me the gpu app if you dont mind.. i wouldnt mind making that thing work a bit harder. [email protected]

Yeah, it's a pretty slick little app. When I was usin an nVidia GPU for [email protected], I could turn the shaders(stream processors) way up and set the fan at a steady 75% and git on w/ it.

Feel free to pass it on, but if you would, host it or e-mail it directly to the recipient. BTW, gmail doesn't allow .exe's. That's why I had to host it for you.

Not bad. I'm looking to build a rig with the i7 920 proc for my dad and would like to keep it under $1000 also. Was your stuff on sale?

That terabyte drive would be better for your primary disk.

why do you think so? the 320gb is a single platter drive.

microcenter had the processor for 229 and the mobo for 225.
the hard drives were similar in price compare to newegg.
the vid card was $40 cheap at tiger direct.
the ram was cheaper on newegg.

i paid a small bit more buying a few misc things in store thanks to tax but it was worth it to save time and returning things.

i wasnt going to build a i7 setup, but the prices compared to q9XXX chips were pretty much the same. ram and mobo cost more but i think it was worth it.

however, the week after i built it, microcenter had the q9600 for $100

If your looking for sale prices, keep an eye out on slickdeals.
They have had good deals on 6gb/12gb memory kits with a board, and Microcenter has the best deal i've seen on a 920.

im thinking about building an i7 machine myself... im using a Dell XPS 420 now...not sure what kinda of improvements I'd see, here's my current specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz
3Gb Ram
300GB HDD
Geforce 8600GT

any reason for the upgrade? q6600 is more than capable.

you would see the biggest upgrade from that video card at the moment - a switch into a GTX260 would be noticible. But, although an I7 is quicker, it isn't worth the money over any higher end c2d.

From everything I've read those i7 processors are pimp.

I usually stay at stock clock speeds until my gear starts getting older and can't run something. Then OC until that does not work for what I need anymore, then upgrade.
