place to get cheap laptop

ok, let me say this, I know next to nothing about computers, I don't like gaming, I just want something that will let me fuck around on the internet, run flash applications, java and let me use msoffice and other basic computer stuff. I have a Dell PC, but want to be a little more mobile. Right now I have a 2GHZ withe like a 2MB hard drive, or something like that. It is about 7 or 8 years old, and it works fine for me...so with that said...

where would be a good place to look for a laptop? I don't care if it is refurbished either. I just don't want to get some piece of shit, and I want to keep the price waaaayyy down. Hell, I would trade my desktop for a laptop if I could (hint for anyone that has a laptop they want to get rid of).

So help me out, where would be the best places to look, or someone give me some ideas of what type of laptop would work. I have been looking on e-bay, but not sure what the fuck I am looking at.

ideas?

I'm actually going to Micro Center to look at laptops this weekend. They're usually pretty good at answering my dumb questions.

Chopped54 here on the board, handles Dell stuff. I think he's a certified warranty guy or something, and he's got some good stuff. I'd start there for a "refurbished" unit.

well, it kind of depends on what I could get in performance vs. cost. I am looking to spend the least amount of money possible, because I do have a good working computer. I found some stuff on ebay and craigslist for less than $300, so I would say less than $300 as close to $200 as possible...if that is even reasonable.

For that price range, you are definitely looking for new or refurbished. Unfortunately, Outlet Computer in Carrollton is usually priced higher than that.

Craigslist is definitely an option but you have to deal with the scammers and half wits on that site.

Dell.com has a refurb site but there aren't any deals in that range right now. However those deals do appear every so often. You need to keep an eye on Techbargains.com to see if Dell offers any coupon codes on refurbs.

From a New perspective, the only thing in that price range is a Netbook type system. These are "mini laptops" with screens as small as 9 inches. Most of them run either WinXP or a version of Linux. Dell offers these for under $300 but they sometimes have sales as low as $199. They are SUPER portable (small as a book) but they are not very powerful.

thanks for the heads up, I will check out those places.

What about these? Any good? Pieces of shit?

processor speed is lower than what I currently have, but I am thinking the processor type (centrino) vs. my 8 year old processor might make up some difference? Am I way off base with that?

The screens are a little small but that might not be a big deal to you. Also, the memory is low at 512MB but you can easily upgrade that over at Frys.

If I were to buy one of those, I would do the following:

-Get details on the warranty and make sure you are comfortable with it.
-Book the laptop and make sure the screen has no dead pixels.
-Open notepad and type away. Make sure the keyboard doesn't have any sticky or broken keys.
-Ask if you can connect to a network to test out the NIC.
-Bring a DVD and test the DVD player.
-Check to see if Windows XP and Office 2007 are LICENSED. If they are not licensed, you might get hit up with a Windows Activation warning when you try to apply updates..
-look for obvious physical damage.
-ask if the warranty covers the battery. Ask if they guarantee battery life for a set duration (like a 6 hour charge)..

That's all I can think about right now...

Good luck

Walmart -Acer Aspire One $300, 8.9" screen running winXP 120GB drive

I've had mine for a few months now and love it. I was carrying a 17" Dell XPS around and was always worried about it. I love my XPS too, just as long as I don't have to carry it. If you plan on being mobile, I wouldn't go bigger than a 15" - it becomes too bulky to get out and use.

With the Acer running office the screen may be too small to work from. As far as portability you can't beat it.
If you wait, the 10" version will be out in a month or two for close to the same money.

yea, I don't know what I want to do at the moment. If I knew I could sell my desktop for a few hundered, that would make me want to do something a little nicer up front and recoup some of the cost by selling that...

I am not sure about the mini notebooks. When I say mobile, I mean mobile around my apartment, to go up stairs, sit on the couch, kitchen table...etc...

I want something that will work, not just something for my price range. If I can't find it, I will hold on to my comptuer, but I have been wanting a laptop for some time now and my tax return is burning a hole in my pocket.

Save your money, keep an eye on Dell's/HP's outlet store - you should be able to find a deal.

My XPS would have cost $3400 if I had them custom build it. Through the refurb store I paid $1700 delivered.

that is kind of what I am leaning towards right now, to just hang out and wait for a deal. Problem is, I will probably forget to shop around.

I just got in my Dell Mini 9. I got it from the outlet last week for 292 shipped with tax.

I had a 15% off coupon that helped get it that low.

I got a black mini with xp home, 1gb ram, 16gb ssd, and bluetooth. I picked up a 16gb sd card and a 2gb memory stick from fry's and really like it so far.

Very light and faster than I expected.

I have my home gaming rig and my work laptop so this fit the bill nicely for me.

If I can get an external dvd drive and a copy of OS X I plan on trying to install it and see how it runs.

How is that thing working out for you.. performance wise?

I'm wondering how well it handles multiple tasks like web browsing, email, and word processing at the same time..

I would be interested in those mini's, but I just can't see an 8" screen working for me on a permanent basis.

How about $500 for 2 laptops.

One is an Toshiba, 14.1 screen, XP Home, 1.2 Ghz, 60 GBhd, 1.2 RAM, DVD-CDRW

The second is a HP, XP home, 2.0 Ghz, 1GB ram, 15" screen.

$300 each.

i can see it lag trying to install apps and do other stuff at the same time. but right now im posting from it with firefox, word 2007, avira av, palm desktop and around 500mb ram usage.

Ive got 6.5gb free space with office 2007, lots of security apps like metasploit, nessus, etc.

I also have most of the portable apps suite on my 16gb sd card.

It fills the gap from my gaming desktop and work laptop.

Its doing good now with xp home but really hope to get it running OSX here before long.

Geez...if you do a little research and decide what you MUST have in a laptop...I'm saying you can get a DAMN nice laptop for around 200 or so on Craigslist that will do what you are asking..probably even 150. I picked up a Dell D620 Widescreen last week in Dallas for 100 bucks with a core2 duo, XP Pro, 80gb, DVD burner, wifi...and it works great. One button was missing on the keyboard which I picked up on Ebay for 10 bucks with free shipping.
