I don't trust optical media to archive my valuable videos. I've seen too many of them go bad.
I don't trust HD's that much as i have had 3 laptop drives fail within a 2 year time frame, 2 samsungs, 1 WD.... then i have had about (3) 3.5" drives fail over a 10 year time frame.... i have Cd's that have been kept out of sunlight, and stored properly that still work after 10 + years.
In the end if its important enough, i make a hard copy, copy to cd, copy to DVD and make a HD back up.
Oh and i'm way behind the power curve on the newest HD movies and games. i didn't realize they were so damn big.
I've had a 1.5tb raid array here at home for over a year and use it to store backups of 2 kids pcs, mine, and the wifes laptop. I also have my share of music, software, and etc on there and its only about 1/2 full.
I'm running 4 x 500gb drives in RAID 5 so even if one fails I have no data loss
2007 Taurus SEL - daily driver
1974 El Camino SS - 400sb
HD movies. They are about 10-15GB each, depending on the quality. That's only 100-150 HD movies in 1.5TB. Also games, nowadays are coming in 3 DVD sets. Take FEAR2, it's 12GB itself.
Tis true, i don't have that many blu-ray rips but i'm nearing 250gb on my hd movies.
I got my main array running 4x750GB drives in a raid 5 which I use to store all my media. I will upgrade it to a 4x1tb drive raid 5 array (not gaining much space, but am clearing a array to use for backups.). Just got to save up to get another adaptec 3405 (or 3805) to throw these 1tb drives onto.
