file recovery software

Last night I turned on my desktop and Windows wouldn't boot because a windows system config file was missing or corrupt. I used the HP recovery console and after it finished... my pictures, music, and videos were gone. I could care less about recovering a few pr0n vids, I just want my pics and music back.

What recovery software do yous guys recommend?

Try Testdisk 6.1. Works great and it is free:

I haven't tried it on USB drives, but I have recovered pictures off of a SD card with it. So I am guessing that it will work the USB drives.

You could try Recuva, it's free and from the makers of Ccleaner.

Thanks for the replies. I checked out those programs, but in the end I went with Recover My Files. http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ This was super easy to use, they had a support forum, and I was able to find all the things I thought were gone. It was a little pricey, but worth every penny.
