Placing pagefile on separate HDD...

I picked up a 32meg cache 1TB drive and will be using it as teh C:. I read in Maximum PC that by putting the pagefile on a separate HDD that it has an effect on how quick the system feels/operates. I had it done this way before but here's my dilemma... with the new drive being as big as it is and having a 32meg cache, will I see any benefit from putting the pagefile on a 500gig 16meg cache drive or would it hinder performance?

TIA,
Bryan

What hunt said, but if you must put the page file on something that isn't getting random reads/writes all the damn time and something that isn't the OS drive.

(preferably)

and if anything, I don't think it will make that HUGE of a performance boost.
its not gonna feel like a "new" computer.

But the fact that whatever I'm doing won't have to wait on the PF before it gets it's chance @ read/write it couldn't hurt right? I mean the disks primary use will be drag-drop folders to it for another backup and that'll be only a sporadic thing at best.

I respect both yours and Hunts opinion as yall know far more than myself. What do you think about this article?

how much physical ram do you have on the machine?
I would take his advice on setting the PF a static size, I mean I did with all my machines. I honestly wouldn't put too much thought into it kinda like how Ron said it, "Set it and forget it."

Configure it to be on the other drive, (the backup one) and leave it.
I would go through a services guide too, and disable all un-needing services. That's usually one of the first things I do when setting up a box.

I have 2 gigs PC6400? (800mhz) and the proc is a Athlon 64 X2 2 meg L2 cache (2 x 1 meg) @ 2.9ghz.
OK, I've pretty much disabled all the services I can w/ out loosing functionality(it's our only pc and my wife and daughter use it) so I can't go extreme w/ it. Typically 32 processes @ idle including taskmanager.exe, so not too bad.

Thanks for the help, it's much appreciated.

Bryan

Is their any benefit to put games/music/pics on a separate sata drive compared to my os drive? OS drive is 500g 32mb cache. Spare drive is 750g 16mb cache.

I would. I use my raptor for only games/os/apps. I got 3 terabytes for everything else.

With windows you will notice a performance increase by having your operating drive with all your usable applications on it, and then a storage drive with all of your data and your pagefile.

It all comes back down to the file system, having the pagefile and a ton of data on the same drive causes a bunch of fragmentation because of the inferior ntfs crap. At least partition the drive for a separate pagefile disk so you can keep those sectors on the drive secluded from the rest with all that read/writing going on.

If you dont really use your pc alot you're not going to notice a bit of a difference, aka if you're trying to make a piece of shit fast this wont do it, but it will fix anyone with lots of I/O going on.

I like windows, but their OS is fucking outdated. The gui is shit, the filesystem is more than 10 years old, and it costs WAY too much.

Ok, so I could get another raptor and just use one hard drive for storing random shit and have my other one for gaming and that will run a lot faster? I have 2g about to get another gig or so. Running Vista

Dont get another raptor for your pagefile and storage, that would be a HUGE waste. Just get a terabyte drive.

Hell even now, the latest terabyte drives outperform the old 74g raptors and some 150gb's.

Go to the rankings tab and check the disk speed, it's a new terabyte Samsung I got at Fry's for $119 out the door.

you shut your whore mouth!

Yeah, its true. I'd still use it since if this drive fails, I rather "lose" 50 gigs then lose a terabyte.

While that does make sense, your replacement cost an a Raptor or Velociraptor is FAAAAAAAARRR higher than my terabyte.

BTW, thi is preaching to the choir but that's what frequent incremental backups are for.

I am not much of a gamer but I picked up Crysis the other day from Gamestop for $20 just to see how it plays it. At 1920x1200 25.5 LG with all settings on high it runs 30-40fps. Looks pretty cool but me and my 6 year old are not the best players.
