Thermal grease

Is it absolutely required or needed for installing a new CPU? If so is there a certain type or kind to go with or is it all the same?

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land." Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said,"Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the Promised Land." Now Obama has stolen your shovel..., taxed your asses, raised the price of camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

Yes it's absolutely necessary and Arctic Silver is considered the best.

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

Alright sweet, just wanted to make sure. I've got some ordered from Newegg. Is the CPU the only place it needs to go?

yes. You can take apart the other cooling parts, but not worth it.

Ok here's the other question, I was told that since I bought a retail CPU the heat sink and cooling fan will come preinstalled so I won't have to worry about any thermal grease... is this true?

What cpu and board did you get? Intel heatsinks have some thermal paste pre-applied.

if you use the retailbox fan it comes with, then you dont need to buy any.

But you're still using paste.

BTW, to the OP. Make sure you read the instructions, a little bit goes a looong way.
