Computer won't recognize dvd/cd player

I've bought 2 or 3 different cd burners, and dvd burners, and my computer can't find any of them. I've searched, and searched to try to manually install them, and nothing shows up. I did look on Major Geeks, and found a program that says its notorious for XP to wipe out the registry of that part of the system, and there was a file to reload it, and i did all that, and still no luck.

Also, i have another older HD i need to wipe out, and piggy back to my current one and load XP on that, is that possible, and how do i do that? Thanks for any help.

Look up your motherboard model, and find the most current drivers for it.

I've got one of those driver update programs from Major geeks loaded, and everytime i check it, everything is up to date.

Try another cable from the motherboard to the drive

This might sound stupid but are you plugging in the cable and also the power supply cable to it? There should be 2 cables plugged in to the back of the cd/dvd burner. maybe it's not getting power and that's why it won't read it? Also make sure they are set to "cable select". Don't worry too much about master and slave right now.

Reboot PC. When it says Press F1 (could also be F2, F12, End, Delete) to enter Setup, hit that key. There should be a section for devices/drives.. check and make sure that it's listed.

Most newer mobos have an application that installs with the initial drivers you install that allows you to check for newer updates for the mobo or BIOS.
