Ever made a private server?

Me and one of my buddies decided to create a WoW private server, just for the hell of it i guess. Anyone else ever done this? With the online guides that are available, it's really not all that hard. We have it all going, but we are just unsure of how many people it will support. Again, we will probly never do anything with the server, it's all just for fun. The only info i have yet to come across is some recommended minimum system requirements for the server itself. (this question is probly geared towards the computer enthusiasts that lurk here) If you were going to make a WoW private server, what are the minimum system requirements that you would go by?

I'd say for something decently fast, but not too much $$$, at least 2 dual core processors and 8 gigs of Ram.

They've done studies you know.... 60% of the time, it works every time

Thanks. Next Question. Using only a typical DSL connection with average run of the mill DSL speeds, how many clients do you think that a good server would support? I mean if the server's hardware was decent, would say... 30 people be able to stay connected?

I know most of these private servers use a T1 connection, but dang that shit is expensive. Plus we are just screwing around here.

Do a packet capture of 1 connection over a 30 minute period. Take the average bandwidth utilized from that period and multiply by 30 and you'll have your answer.

The upload speed is what's going kill you, and to handle the data/people, I think you will be too limited there.

He mentioned one for WoW, needs to handle a lot more people then 5-6.

I'm sure they don't like it and shit, but wtf they gonna do about it? You'll at least get a cease and desist type warning first.

Really, it's not that big of deal. Build the damned server, turn it up and see wtf happens. Obviously you're not going to do the packet captures and everything else required.

Nor are you going to upgrade your home service or have it hosted off site.

So just do it.

Well, blizz destroyed all the popular private servers this week. There was a top 100 list, and all of those are now down and their websites say that they are not coming back up. Some are even saying that they have to appear in court. Thats like tens of thousands of people who played there and are just out of luck. I guess thats the risk you take. Course they were "taking donations" and if i was one of the people who created the game i would be a little pissed too. Really they are no better than the gold spammers from china who plague the retail servers, profiting off of someone else's creation.
