Trying to avoid a format/reinstal. XP Home

I'm working on a friends laptop (Inspiron 5100) and it won't boot normally but will boot in Safe Mode. I've gone through device mgr. to check for hdwr. conflicts and all's well. The puter all ready has SP3 and I only have an SP2 disc and for whatever reason I can't/ don't have the option to do a repair install. I'd really like to do that rather than dl ALL the drivers, format, install, blah blah blah.

When I boot from the disc and go to install XP to get to the recovery console to do a repair I get the message that it's an older version than what is already on the puter.

Are there any options left other than a format/reinstall?

Bryan

Listen to my buddy, Jeff Bolton, from 6-9 AM Mon-Fri.

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.
