Need partition help....

So I installed what I thought was Partition Magic, which is WAS, but not the one we all think of... some off brand BS. Anyways, it changed my partition table, and now I cannot boot vista. I need something that I can throw on a usb flash drive that will allow me to edit the partition table... any ideas? I really do NOT want to lose all my stuff.

This sucks... For one, I cannot figure out how to make this cd bootable... and when I try to run any of the utilities from the recovery consoles command prompt, it just says file not found, but Im starring it in the fu*king face... I uncompressed Partition Manager, and have pm.exe.... but when I type in pm.exe, it cant find it. I need another way to get to command prompt besides this stupid ass recovery console. I have a feeling its whats keeping me from opening these utilities.... So, how do I make this bootable? And can I do it on a USB flash drive or do I need to put it on a cd?

ok, nevermind the nevermind. I got the bootcd to load up... but I cannot run ANY of the applications in it... It gets to the point where its asking if I want to load various drivers, Im guessing it never finds the cdrom drive, because it eventually says BootCD files were not found and terminates. This really sucks.

Its a SATA CDROM fwiw...

When I used it, I set the Bios to boot from the cd drive and rebooted w/ the disc in the tray. From there I was able to use all utilities on the disc.

That got me closer, I can see the partition, but it wont let me edit the table or anything... just create a new one (which would erase everything)...

Here's the deal... I got Active Partition Recovery... and I can load that in the command prompt on the recovery console. I can SEE the old partition and all my files... It has a drive letter of 1: (The number 1, not L). There is no option to recover it... Perhaps finding a way to change the drive letter back to C would fix it?

This is what I did, found this on the net (after the fact of course )

After very thorough testing, it appears that Partition Magic 8.01 is not
compatible with NTFS partitions created during the install of Vista RC1 (and
earlier versions of Vista).

After installing Vista, if you boot from the P.M. floppies you will get an
error message (error 110) that the partition is corrupt and asks if you want
to fix it.

You had better say NO!

If you don't allow P.M. to fix it, and continue booting into P.M. the drive
will show as corrupt and give the former error, superimposed on the
partition graphic. At this time, if you just reboot, everything will still
be fine. Vista will still boot.

If you allow P.M. to repair the partition you will now see error 11. At this
point the damage has been done and Vista will no longer boot.

Guess it is time to retire this venerable old workhorse of a program, as I
am not going to buy Symantec's version just to see if it is compatible.

Nah, it just messed up the partitions/MBR Im assuming, cause I can still see it in that program. God I hope not man, I copied EVERYTHING off my backup external to this HDD so I could reformat the external to Fat32 so I could use it on my PS3... and when I loaded up Partition Magic to format the external, it took my main OS HDD with it, along with my entire backup contents... Kinda ironic.

Ok, from what I've read, PM8 thinks there is something wrong with the partition sizes when ran in vista... It offers to correct the problem (but actually creates one)... It changes the size of the partitions causing them to overlap, which is where Im at now... Im so lost here, sucks.

I had a similar issue happen w/ Vista. I had copied everything over to another drive inside the puter and went to load Vista on the main drive. Somehow or other, the MBR didn't copy... and it wouldn't boot w/out the disc. I found out later that it tried ti install on the extra drive at the same time and I lost all data.

Let me ask this... if I were to find a way to create a disk image (norton ghost or something), delete the partition, reformat the whole drive, and copy that image back over, would it work? Or does the image also contain the partition information?

I restarted the format b4 I left, and remoted in to watch the progress. it finished, and I started using Driveimage XML to backup the HDD to the external... As of right now it is 96% done after 4 hours and 53 minutes. So once this thing finishes... am I ok to format the f'ed up HDD? And if so, do I just do a fresh install and copy my old shit back over? Or should I re-image with the backup im creating?

Move the image to the HDD you'll be using but keep an image for just in case. I like to re-image mine at least every other week for safety sake.

Ok, the drive is re-imaged... stuck it back in the computer, turned it on, and all it does is POST, and restart. Tried booting off the vista cd that came with my laptop, but it wont boot... it WILL boot from an XP cd, but offers no utilities to fix any problems. So I tried running an MBR mgr off a boot disk, but cant figure out wtf. Im getting tired of dickin with this crap.

Well, I figured some shit out... When I reimaged the HDD, and put it back in, the Bios reset the setting for RAID, and it would not boot the vista cd or anything. I changed the setting back to ATA, and it booted the cd, but still could not get my old image to boot. Kept saying HDD error. So I just re-formatted and did a fresh install. I'll just copy my shit back over the old fashioned way. So, DO NOT USE Partition Magic 8 with Vista... it will fuck yo' shit up!

Thanks for all the help guys!
