computer gurus...
my buddy is saying that he cannot use IE and that outlook express will not open up and work. he says that it tells him he is not connected to the internet, but, he can use yahoo messenger as that is how we were talking. i have no clue how to help him or even where to start. he says that this is the exact window it shows when trying to open outlook and connect to his mail. we went through some steps i found online and a black box opens but does nothing.

I would start with a couple of good adware scanners. Adware and Spybot.

he has no way of downloading anything. he is paying for AVG so he gets all that offers. not sure what all he has. i do know that this PC is old as hell, slow as hell and is about completely full . he doesn't save anything to disc or nothing

i have the adaware, spybot and firefox installers already on my computer. i will ask him about it tomorrow and if he doesn't, i will send them to him to try. he is thinking he got a bad virus, but i don't have a clue

Might just want to double-check his connection settings in IE....IE and OLExp share the same connection settings, so I'll bet that is your smoking gun.
In IE - Tools menu, Internet options, Connections tab, click the LAN settings button, then make sure the box for "automatically detect settings" is checked....nothing else should be checked on that tab.
Is he connecting through cable, DSL, or *cough* dial-up?

Tell him to download HiJack this. Have him send you the log and then post it here. We can look to see what is running. Maybe a BHO blocking TCPIP traffic.

Also, his WINSOCK may have been corrupted or destroyed. Get him to DL winsockrepair

how is he supposed to download anything when he can't surf or check his email. all he can do is get on yahoo and myspace messenger
