Laptop to a plasma tv?

My laptop has a VGA output on the back. If I get a cable to hook the laptop to the tv and have an audio output cable from the tv ran to my receiver will I get video and sound?

You will have to have the laptop output video to the tv or directly to the receiver for the sound. Whats the model on the tv? The tv should have an input for PC VGA (or DVI) along with specified audio in ports for it.

If not, just run an 2.5mm jack to your receiver (or 2.5mm/rca jack convertor) either solution should work.

Laptop is a Dell 5500 and the TV is a 50in LG. I don't remember what the model is but I know its got a vga, dvi, hdmi, rca, component, and some other hook ups. The laptop only has a vga output though .

Should work fine. I've watched quite a few shows online that I've missed on live TV and forgotten to DVR this way.

No it will not. There has to be an audio output cable from your laptop to either the tv for audio, or to the receiver for audio. Roliath has the right idea. I have the headphone output on my laptop ( which is 3.5mm not 2.5mm btw) plugged into a 3.5mm to RCA audio cable ( $6 tops at radio shack) to the TV. Some TVs have an audio out connection which can be used for the receiver. Having it that way enables you to choose using the TV speakers or the receivers, or if deemed neccesary both.

I figured it went without saying he needed the audio out from the laptop, guess not. The LG's have a audio in for the headphone cable, so the RCA isn't really necessary.
