Anti-virus

I am about to buy a brand new hp laptop. I have a copy of symantec client security that I use on my home computers, but I think I want to try a different anti-virus/firewall for the laptop. What is good?? I want to try and steer clear of Norton. Anyone ever hear of BitDefender. I am open to suggestions, I just don't want to worry about harming the computer. It would be nice for it to be free and last longer than a year.

I need both the anti-virus and a firewall. I don't want to download a bunch of programs for separate operations.
TIA

Free is just the anti virus. Sorry not sure how long the trial is but I'm sure the website should say what it is. Honestly, get a router for your firewall and you'll be better off. There are other free options for software firewalls like ZoneAlarm.

BestBuy, Circuit City, Office Depot/Max, even Wallies. Hell, you may be able to buy one at Lowe's or Handy Depot.

Plug the router into your broadband connection (DSL or cable modem), plug your laptop into the router. Whether you have one or 250 computers attached to the router, it shows it's IP address to the outside world. That's called NAT - Network Address Translation. None of the computers is directly attached to the web, and ports open under Windoze are closed on the router.

Most SOHO (Small Office / Home Office - entry level) routers also provide at least minimal (stateless) packet inspection. Google 'Packet Inspection' if you want to know more.

I usta bag on Norton but they've dramatically changed their program. It is the lightest av app/suite I have ever used. Check it out.

I work for the Government in IT and while we have all of our stuff locked down I use nothing more than Spybot and Hijack this at my house. Hijack this finds it, I delete the active DLL's and Spybot cleans house.
