PC issue, had to restore lost all files

Like the title says, last night finally got our internet hooked up and decided to hook up my wireless router. Shut down the PC (on Windows XP), restarted and then had that "windows did not properly shut-down properly" screen come up.

I thought it was no big deal so I clicked continue but the computer kept restarting once it reached the Big Windows XP logo.....

I tried it again, same thing....restarted. Tried running it under safe mode, blue screen of death came up . I tried f10 to diagnose the problem and when the scan completed, it showed there was a part of the HD that failed .

I had no other choice but to restore the computer to its original settings because I was worried that after 8 non-stop restarts the HD would be ruined. I lost everything...... Unfortunately my fiance had quite a few photos of the past few years and she is very sad because she hadn't backed up the most recent ones.

Is there any way to retrive them or am I SOL? Hell I'll even pay for a program if I can get the photos back. Any help is appreciated.

you can try extracting the data by installing that drive into another pc as a slave. You shouldn't have to deal with the neverending reboots and may get lucky if those pics are not on the part of the HD that is damaged...

It really depends on what Install you did. Did you format the HD before you installed the OS. Usually the OS will want to format before installing it. For the normal user you can chock the files up as lost. If you want to spend some money I know a couple people that may be able to help you. I could also take a look at it and see if I see anything on the HD. If your HD is going bad you may be back in this same position shortly.

Installed the OS (Operating System?)? I'm a little confused by what you mean....

I'm not sure if the HD is going bad, its had that screen come up before when it hasn't been properly shut down and all I did was click continue (or safe mode) and no issues. This is the first time its ever not proceeded normally after not being shut down properly.

I may have to take you up on that offer about taking a look at it. She's REALLY down about the photos (GIGs worth)

Yeah I wish I would have......

Also that http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ program didn't work, it only found pictures that she reloaded AFTER I did a system restore when I used the trial/pre-order version.

you restored the computer. that involves formatting the HD and installing the OS.

IF your restore only did a "quick" format then you might have a chance to restore files.

otherwise if it was a full/regular format, you're out of luck.

if it was a quick format a program called Get Data Back can scan every sector of your hard drive. its always best to put the drive in a different computer as a slave drive and let it scan.

*EDIT, not sure how recovermyfiles.com works but it might do the same thing.

you probably best off pulling the hard drive, throwing it into another working desktop and setting it up as a slave drive. from there you you should be able to copy what you need.

You can also load a knottpix CD, mount the windows partition via the mount command. After that just cp /(mount point) /dev/(depending what your usb device is listed under. You can check by doing fdisk -l. Also with knoppix, you can ssh into it with another computer(assuming you configured the network), configure the ftp and retrieve it from there to the computer you logged in to it through with a ftp program or you can just put it on the browser. You don't have to set up the ftp via ssh, you can just use the command prompt too. Many things to do with a knoppix CD.

Also, all of this varies if you have ide or sata hard drives. Just do a fdisk -l to get what type of Hd you have, either hda or sda. Hope that helped a bit.If you have any questions, use the command "man". Or we can help you here too.

*UPDATE*

Well my fiance tried out this program again last night and IT WORKED!!!

It found 8000 pics that were lost. I bought the program to restore them to my external drive but I have one issue. Is there any way to save (as) one time? I have to hit "SAVE" for every SINGLE time for each one & its taking a LONG time. I'm not even half way yet

Man your freekin lucky. I lost the ONLY copies of my two chirrens baby pictures. Now that you're able to recover them, make multiple copies on different media types. ie: Ext. HDD, CD. DVD.... Redundancy is you friend.
