my computer locked up

and i restarted it. it then showed a "disc read error, press alt+ctl+del to restart" on a black screen. i can get into the BIOS and CMOS settings, and it still sees my hd. i would load my XP disc in and it will tell me to press any key to boot from disc and i do, then it says inspecting hardware and all that. then it goes to a black screen and does nothing. im stuck without a computer and it is driving me nuts, i need so my wife can get on the web cam and i can see my kids. so, if anyone have had this happen and can help, please let me know.

Has your PC been kicked, knocked over, or anything recently? Open it up and make sure the cables connecting from your harddrive to motherboard are connected securely.

any funny noises coming from the hard drive?

You might try a repair/recovery install but I'd bet the drive is going or gone

well, the drive isn't but a couple years old and only been used maybe a year of that. no it hasn't been dropped/kicked or anything. it doesn't make any "weird" noises. it doesn't have any case fans but i do have a personal fan on it with the side off. everything is connected fine. i about took it all apart and put it all back together and still nothing. i can't do a repair/recovery cuz it wont go that far in XP setup. i guess im gonna have to wait and get the money together and get a new to me computer.

im thinking about this one

only thing is it's gonna be about a week and a half or so before i get the money to get one. oh well

I'd wait and get something a little nicer that should be less trouble for you.

Check out the Dell refurb outlet. I've never heard much good from TigerDirect.

Hell I've got a spare 2.66 P4 with an ASUS board thats probably more stable than that.

Those low end no name boxes tend to have some junk motherboards that will cause all sorts of trouble.

Here's the cheapest one they have right now at dell.com/dfo
