Question How to check if an HDD is bad.

How would I go about doing this? My friend did a fresh install XP Home and now it does a looping reboot @ XP Home screen. The pc hasn't been used in 1.5-2 yrs. and when he first turned it on it asked for the second disk for XP.

Anyhow, from the ppl I've spoken to it's likely a bad drive, bur I wan't to verify this before replacing it. Soooooo, how would I do this?

I have Hirens BootCD 9.5 but am completely clueless on how to use any of the disk utilities that are on it.

Help prease.

Edit: Man I feel like an idiot,a "Boot Disc" won't work w/ out setting the system to boot from disc.

Think you need to format/reinstall your OS(XP), read this first.

anytime i had a HD go out, you knew about it cause it clicked rather loudly. this doesnt sound like a broken HD. id reboot with XP disc in the cd tray. delete all partitions, reinstall with full format using NTFS.

Thumbs up

Yeah, I ran some utilities from Hiren's and everything came back fine, so I put in the XP install disk and it showed a corrupt install and repaired it.

Thanks yall and thanks Hunt for always pushin' Hirens. It's an awesome deal!

Yeah it's a very useful tool. It can make a puter illiterate like me seem knowledgeable to the more illiterate.

FWIW the problem was a corrupt install.
